In addition there were 69 Italian prisoners in 1895.
The influnce of immigration can also be realized
in increase of insanity in Massachusetts. The records
of the state hospitals for nineteen years (1880-1898)
show a total of 31,269 cases of insanity admitted to
these institutions (2). The parentage of these cases
was as follows, clearly indicating the position of
the foreign element:

Even more marked was the effect on pauperism,
