MARK XI. 21-33.-XII. 1.

saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig | tree which thou cursedst is withered away!

VER. 22.

Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, λέγει αὐτοῖς· Έχετε πίστιν Θεοῦ.

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have* faith in God.

* Or, the faith of God.

VER. 23.

̓Αμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅτι ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ὄρει τούτων "Αρθητι, καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν· καὶ μὴ διακριθῇ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὑτοῦ, ἀλλὰ πιστεύσῃ ὅτι ἃ λέγει γίνεται· ἔσται αὐτῷ ὃ ἐὰν εἴπῃ.

For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

VER. 24.

Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν, πάντα ὅσα ἂν προσευχόμενοι αἰτεῖσθε, πιστεύετε ὅτι λαμβάνετε καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν,

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

VER. 25.

Καὶ ὅταν στήμητε προσευχόμενοι, ἀφίσ ετε εἴ τι ἔχετε κατά τινος· ἵνα καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἀφῇ ὑμῖν τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν.

a And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may for

give you your trespasses.

VER. 27.

Καὶ ἔρχονται πάλιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ περιπατοῦντος αὐτοῦ, ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ̓Αρχιερεῖς, καὶ οἱ Γραμμα τεῖς, καὶ οἱ Πρεσβύτεροι

VER. 28.

Καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσία ταῦτα ποιεῖς ; καὶ τίς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἔδωκεν, ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῆς;

And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?

VER. 29.

'Ο δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκρίθεις, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Επερωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ ἕνα λόγον, καὶ ἀποκρίθητέ μοι, καὶ ἐρῶ ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξου σία ταῦτα ποιῶ.

And Jesus answered and said unto

them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. * Or, thing.

VER. 30.

Τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν, ἡ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; ἀποκρίθητέ μοι.

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.

VER. 31.

Καὶ ἐλογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς, λέγοντες· Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, Εξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· Διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ ;

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven ; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

VER. 32.

ἐφοβοῦντο τὸν λαὸν· ἅπαντες γὰρ εἶχον τὸν,

̓Αλλ ̓ ἐὰν εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων

Ἰωάννην, ὅτι ὄντως προφήτες ἦν.

But if we shall say, of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. VER. 33.

Καὶ ἀποκριθέντες, λέγουσι τῷ Ἰησοῦ» Οὐκ οἴδαμεν. Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς, λέγει αὐτοῖς· Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶν

And they answered and said unto Je-
We cannot tell. And Jesus answer-

ing saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

CHAP. XII.—VER. 1.
Καὶ ἤρξατο αὐτοῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς λέγειν

a And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there ¦ ̓Αμπελῶνα ἐφύτευσεν ἄνθρωπος, καὶ πε

ριέθηκε φραγμὸν, καὶ ὤρυξεν ὑπολήνιον, καὶ ᾠκοδόμησε πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδοτο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησε.

And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

Τί οὖν ποιήσει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ; Ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργούς,

What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.

VER. 10.

Οὐδὲ τὴν γραφὴν ταύτην ἀνέγνωτε; Λίθαν ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτ τος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας·

And have ye not read this Scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

VER. 11.

Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη· καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν. This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes ?

VER. 12.

Καὶ ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν κρατῆσαι· καὶ ἐφοβή θησαν τὸν ὄχλον· ἔγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παραβολὴν εἶπε· καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν, ἀπῆλθον.

a And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them : and they left him, and went their way.

VER. 15.

Καὶ ἀποστέλλουσι πρὸς αὐτόν τινας τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ τῶν Ἡρωδιανῶν, ἵνα αὐτὸν ἀγρεύσωσι λόγῳ.

And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to

catch him in his words.

Καὶ προσελθὼν εἷς τῶν Γραμματέων, ἀκούσας αὐτῶν συζητούντων, εἰδὼς ὅτι και λῶς αὐτοῖς ἀπεκρίθη, ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν Ποία ἐστὶ πρώτη πασῶν ἐντολή ;

* And one of the Scribes came, and hating heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

a Then one of them which was a Law

yer, asked him a question tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Matt. xxii. 35, 36.

VER. 29.

Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ· Οτι πρώτη πασῶν τῶν ἐντολῶν· ̓́Ακουε Ἰσραὴλ, Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, Κύριος εἷς ἐστι.

And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, a Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

a Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might, Deut. vi, 4, 5.

And the second is like, namely, this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

VER. 32.

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Γραμματεύς· Καλῶς, διδάσκαλε, ἐπ ̓ ἀληθείας εἶπας, ὅτι εἷς ἐστι Θεὸς, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλος πλὴν αὐτοῦ·

And the Scribe said unto him, Well,

Master, thou hast said the truth : for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

VER. 33.

Καὶ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν αὐτὸν ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρ δίας, καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς συνέσεως, καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ψυχῆς, καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ἰσχύος, καὶ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν τὸν πλησίον ὡς ἑαυτὸν, πλεῖον ἐστι πάντων τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων καὶ τῶν θυ

σιῶν.

And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burntofferings and sacrifices.

VER. 34.

Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ὅτι νουνεχῶς ἀπεκρίθη, εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Οὐ μακρὰν εἶ ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ. Καὶ οὐδεὶς οὐκέ τι ἐτόλμα αὐτὸν ἐπερωτῆσαι.

And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

VER. 35.

Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ̓Ιησοῦς ἔλεγε, διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῶν Πῶς λέγουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς, ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς υἱός ἐστι Δαβίδ ;

a And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the Scribes that Christ is the son of David ? a See on Matt. xxii. ver. 41-45. VER. 36.

Αὐτὸς γὰρ Δαβὶδ εἶπεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι τῷ ἁγίῳ· Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου· Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου, ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχ θρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου.

For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

VER. 37.

πόθεν υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστι ; Καὶ ὁ πολὺς ὄχλος Αὐτὸς οὖν Δαβὶδ λέγει αὐτὸν Κύριον· καὶ ήκουεν αὐτοῦ ἡδέως.

David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. a See on Matt. xi. ver. 5. clause 5.

Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ·

Βλέπετε ἀπὸ τῶν γραμματέων, τῶν θελόντων ἐν στολαῖς περιπατεῖν, καὶ ἀσπασ· μοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς,

And he said unto them in his doctrine, a Beware of the Scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the market-places,

VER. 39.

Καὶ πρωτοκαθεδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς, καὶ πρωτοκλισίας ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις·

And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:

VER. 40.

Οἱ κατεσθίοντες τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν, καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσευχόμενοι· οὗτοι λήψονται περισσότερον κρίμα.

• Which devour widows houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

VER. 41.

Καὶ καθίσας ὁ Ἰησοῦς κατέναντι τοῦ γα ζοφυλακίου, ἐθεώρει πῶς ὁ ὄχλος βάλλει χαλκὸν εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον· καὶ πολλοὶ πλούσιοι ἔβαλλον απολλά.

* And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many

that were rich cast in much.

And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in

unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had, Luke xxi. 1--4.

VER. 42.

Καὶ ἐλθοῦσα μία χήρα πτωχὴ ἔβαλε λεπτὰ δύο, ὅ ἐστι κοδράντης.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two * mites, which make a farthing.

*It is the seventh part of one piece

of that brass money.

VER. 43.

αὑτοῦ, λέγει αὐτοῖς· ̓Αμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅτι ἡ χήρα αὕτη ἡ πτωχὴ πλεῖον πάντων βέβληκε τῶν βαλόντων εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον.

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury :

VER. 44.

Πάντες γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς ἔβαλον· αὕτη δὲ ἐκ τῆς ὑστερήσεως αὐτῆς πάντα ὅσα εἶχεν ἔβαλεν, ὅλον τὸν βίον αὐτῆς.

For all they did cast in of their abundance: but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

CHAP. XIII.-VER. 1.

Καὶ ἐκπορευομένου αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ, λέγει αὐτῷ εἷς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ· Διδάσκ καλε, ἴδε ποταποὶ λίθοι, καὶ ποταπαὶ οἰκοδομαί.

a And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here !
