31st May 1712.

Mr. Patrick Blair apothecary in Cupar, who had been recommended by the bishop of Aberdeen and severall eminent physicians in Angus, was graduated Doctor of Medicine.

3rd August 1713.

Mr. John Lammie, educated and graduated master of arts in this college, and now rector of Stanis near London, granted a diploma of Doctor of Divinity.

19th October 1713.

A diploma of Doctor of Divinity sent to Mr. Alexander Scrimsour professor of theology in the new college of St. Andrews,

Eo die, Mr. Alexander Burnet and Mr. John Gordon appointed to attend the meeting of the shire, and vote in the election of a commissioner to the parliament.

2nd January 1714.

It was unanimously agreed that Mr. John Sharp, educated in this college, and having been chaplain to her majesties garison in New York these twelve years past, should be graduated Doctor of Theologie on Wednesday next, being the day of Epiphanie.

The said day, it was unanimously agreed that a diploma of Doctor of the Lawes should be transmitted to Mr. Alexander Cuming son to sir Alexander Cuming younger of Culter, who hath sufficiently documented his having past his privat tryalls after the ordinary manner, in order to his entring advocat befor the facultie of advocats at Edinburgh.

Robert Warrander, William Keir, Patrick Ogilvie, John Ogilvie, Angus Sage, Keneth McKenzie, William Ord, and James Gatt bursars and students expelled for forcing the drummer of Old Aberdeen to make a pro

clamation on the first Thursday of February last, desiring all persons to come and see the duke of Brunswick brunt in effigy, and for drinking the health of the pretender under the title of king James the eighth, at a bonfire lit by them at the college gate, in which they burned a picture on paper, which they called the picture of the duke of Brunswick.

24th March 1718.

The principall having produced a letter to my lord Forglen from five ministers in favours of James Gatt one of the students extruded for their disloyal practises in the time of the rebellion, which letter had satisfied several members of the commission as to that boys loyal and discreet carriage ever since, and he being of a promising genius, the masters allow him to receive degrees with the rest in Mr. Burnet's class.

15th September 1718.

The masters present considering that whereas this society, upon the 14th day of May 1716, upon receiving a letter from the deceased Charles earl of Erroll late chancelor of this university, dimitting the said office, did then proceed to ... elect Archibald earl of Ilay to be chancelour, of which his lordship was then acquainted, but upon weighty motives did not think fit to accept the said office, [do now elect] the most noble and potent John duke of Roxbrugh, present secretary of state, to be chancelour.

9th June 1719.

Alban Thomas, fellow of the royal society at London and keeper of their rarities, obtains the diploma of Doctor of Physic on the recommendation of Dr. Blair. In regard the last album for graduates in divinity law physic and philosophy is amissing, the masters appoint the library keeper to provide a new book, and carefully insert the names of all the graduates hencefurth.

3rd September 1719.

This day, the masters took a view of the library in order to make some reparations for accommodating severall books that are lying loose. They in the meantime appoint a partition of deals to be made instantly at the west end of the library untill such time as the college shall be in a condition to enlarge the said library, by taking down the partition wall on the

east end.

On the 21st day of October last, the masters signed a diploma ad eundem, gratis, in favours of Dr. John Marshall, who was graduate Doctor of Medicine formerly at Padua.

10th November 1719.

This day, the masters signed a diploma, gratis, in favours of Mr. Alexander Anderson minister at Duffus, as Doctor of Medicine, he being a gentleman of approven skill of physic, skill of physic, as also his father having been once regent, and his grandfather Mr. John Rou once principall in this university.

15th January 1722.

The masters taking to their serious consideration the several abuses that have crept in at meetings or conveniendums of the students, treats at valedictories and graduations, notwithstanding of former laudable acts of this university, . . . do now unanimously agree and enact that there shall be no conveniendums of the students in order to make collections for the graduation, but what the master of the respective class shall be present at as preses; that no conveniendum be kept after nine o'clock at night; that there be only one place common to all the different classes for keeping their different meetings, the laigh common hall or the upper hall, in the option of the regents; . . . that the different classes keep their meetings on different nights, . . . and that there be no sealing of gowns; that there be no drinking at any conveniendum either in college or tavern; that at the magistrands' valedictory the problematick theses shall not exceed a sheet of paper; that there shall be no treat or drinking with any of the other classes at the said valedictory; and that the ordinary theses every Saturday shall not exceed half a sheet: and appoint publick intimation to be made of these rules in the public schools, and in the respective private schools.

16th October 1722.

The principall reported that, conform to college act August 22, he with others of the masters had discoursed William Jaffray, whom the college had chosen oeconomus, and that he had accepted of that office for one year upon the following terms, videlicet, that each student who shall have his dyet at the first table pay for himself fifty merks per quarter; that those masters who are in use to eat at the college table shall pay, each master for himself and his servant, at the rate of six bolls victual per quarter, half bear half meal; and that the college procurator shall pay to him six bolls bear

and six bolls meal betwixt Yuill and Candlemass, and twenty pounds Scots for washing the naprie and keeping the utensils in good repair; and likewise that he have the college garden for his own use and all that it affords, over and above what is needful for the college table, he being always obliged to keep the trees walks and flower plot in good order, and that without any salary; and that he have the benefit of the gardener's house, and get possession of the same at Whitsunday next. . .

21st October 1723.

The said day, the principall and masters considering the great inconveniences to the university by the neglect of the profession and study of the civil law, did judge it their duty to represent the same to Mr. Alexander Garden [of Troup] civilist, and to desire his attendance conform to the foundation.

23rd December 1725.

The procuratores nationum, with the principal and masters, unanimously elect Dr. James Gregory in Aberdeen to the office of mediciner.

11th January 1726.

The masters having formerly seen and approven an English poem written by Mr. David Malloch tutor to the duke of Montrose's sons, in imitation of the Danaides, and having ordered the same to be published therewith, they as a mark of esteem and respect . . unanimously agreed that a diploma shall be sent to him conferring on him the degree of Master of Arts.

8th April 1726.

Sir Nicolas Trott late governor of Carolina, whose performance and specimen of a Hebrew dictionary had been approven by the college in summer 1724, and who had been created a Doctor of Laws by the university of Oxford, obtains, at his own request, a diploma ad eundem gradum.

25th April 1726.

Doctor Gregory elected dean of the facultie of medicine.

12th December 1727.

The said day, Lesley of Iden having sent to the college as a present a curious manuscript on vellum relating to the cathedral church of Aberdeen,

containing the necrologie thereof and other valuable papers, a letter of thanks to be written to him.

23rd December 1728.

The said day, the university ordered to be sent off for London six diplomas for the degree of Doctor of Divinity in favours of masters Obadiah Hughes, John Cummins, John Evans, William Harris, Jabesh Earle, and Isaac Watts.

29th August 1732.

Mr. John Guise, and Mr. Thomas Ridgeley, two dissenting ministers of the city of London, made Doctors of Divinity.

31st October 1732.

The principal and masters appoint Mr. Alexander Rait, not only to assist the subprincipal in teaching his philosophy class, but also to teach mathematics both publicly and privately in the college.

20th December 1732.

Doctor James Gregorie dimits his office of professor of medicine.

Doctor James Gregorie, younger, unanimously elected professor of medicine.

5th July 1737.

Mr. Philip Doddridge, minister of the gospel, and master of an academy at Northampton, a person of established character for learning, and particularly knowledge in divinity, created a Doctor in Divinity.

15th February 1738.

The university unanimously resolved that the degree of Batchelor in Divinity be conferred upon the reverend Mr. Edmund Calamy, minister of the gospel in London, and son to the late Dr. Edmund Calamy.

10th July 1738.

Mr. Archibald Campbell, professor of church history in the university of St. Andrews, made Doctor of Divinity.
