VARIATIONS OF BAROMETER, THERMOMETER, &c. at Nine o'Clock A. By T. BLUNT, Mathematical Instrument Maker to his Majesty, No, 22, CORNHILL, LONDON MARKETS, APRIL 21, 1818. COTTON.-The sales of Cotton have lately been so extensive, that the stock in London is decreasing rapidly; the quantity at market, with the exception of East India descriptions, is very limited; good Pernams and Surats have been much inquired after, but the holders have been advancing so much in their prices, that the transactions are not so extensive as would otherwise have been the case. The sales of Cotton since our last exceed 2500 bags-850 Pernambucco 2s. 14d. a 2s. 2d. picked 2s. 24d. principally at 2s. 13d.; 150 bags to arrive 2s. 1d.; 200 Cearas at 2s. 14d.; 100 Surinams 2s. Od. a 2s. 04d.; 60 Demeraras 2s. 1d. a 2s. 14d.: 250 Bourbon 2s. 4d. a 2s. 8d. principally at 2s. 6d. taken on speculation: 520 Surats 14d. a 174d.; 350 Bengals 10d. a 114d,; the three latter exclusive of duty; a small proportion of The Pernamos, and about a half of the Ben gals, were reported to be taken for expi tation; the remainder of the purchases w made by the trade. "Liverpool, April 18. "The trade in Manchester continui very good, and the east winds keeping ( supplies, we have again experienced active demand for Cottons. A dispe tion has manifested itself to purchase B zils on speculation, and they have in com quence advanced about 4 per lb. Rowe Orleans, and Bengals, may be conside about 4d. per lh, higher, but the princi rise has been in Sea Islands, which bi advanced about 2d, per lb. in consequel of the great scarcity. Yesterday, there w brought forward by auction 2458 Beng of which 812 went off steadily at 11 124d, for fair to good fair, and 138. a 13 for good quality: the better qualities al improvement of 4d, per lb. and the lu qualities at full prices; the remainder were withdrawn, but about 200 bales have been sold since the sale at 124d, and this price refused for the principal part of a favourite mark, 117 Domingos sold at 204d. a 2jd. SUGAR.-The demand for Sugars last week continued limited, and as the holders evinced great eagerness to effect sales, a further depression of Is, was submitted to; several parcels held on speculation were disposed of at a greater depression. The accounts from Jamaica and the Leeward Islands, hold out the prospect of considerable arrivals sooner than was generally expected; the market was in consequence very heavy, yet it may be considered that the wholesale grocers and refiners are now reported to be nearly out of stock, and as the latter have made uo considerable purchases of raw Sugar for a length of time, the first arrivals, particularly from Jamaica, will probably meet an immediate sale. There is little probability of any new supplies of Sugar, on account of the continuance of easterly winds; the holders in consequence to day do not evince so much anxiety to effect sales; the purchases are very limited, as few parcels of good quality are offering: the prices this forenoon may however be stated a shade higher than on Friday last, and more confidence amongst the holders. A public sale of Barbadoes Bagar was this forenoon brought forward, it consisted of 175 hhds. 42 tierces; the whole went off freely; the yellows much about the current prices of the market; the white went off with great briskness 2s. per cwt. higher, being wanted by the wholesale grocers; on account of the late scarcity of good Sagars-good white realised 95s.; middling 90s. 6d. and 91s.; ordinary 88s. ; yellow 83s. a 87s.; one lot brown 77s. 6d. The refined market continued heavy till towards the close of last week, when there was a revived inquiry, particularly for export; brown Lumps were in great request about 105s.; the prices of Refined continue to rate low in proportion to raw Sugar, yet the shipping orders are still mostly limited to prices 3s. or 4s. under the market currency: should refined goods give way a few shillings, either from the decline in the prices of the raw, or from any other cause, there can be no question that very extensive export orders would be immediately executed, -Molasses continue in request at our quotation. Foreign Sugars are little inquired after; no alteration can be stated in the prices. COFFEE.-There was little alteration in the prices of Coffee last week; the demand after the day of our publication became more limited, but no depression in the prices was submitted to. A public sale of 25 casks and 250 bags was brought forward; the late prices of Demerara were fully supported - fine ordinary 1135.; middling 115s. 6d.; good middling 121s. 6d.; good middling Jamaica, but very dingy, realised 61. 5s. und 61. 6s, per cwt. The finer descriptions of Coffee are so exceedingly scarce, that very high prices are submitted to. IRISH PROVISIONS, &c.-The Provision market continues steady at our quo tations.-Bacon has been so heavy, that the prices inserted may he considered in a great measure nominal. There has been a decline of 4s. a 5s. in Butters, but there are few sellers at the depression: the trade anticipate a revival in the market. OIL. The prices of Whale Oil are rather advancing; several considerable parcels have lately changed hands about our quotations.-There has been some interest excited in the market as to what prices the Greenland Oil of this year's fishing will commence at; the trade are mentioning about 321. or 331., but we believe there have been no contracts yet entered into.-Seed Oils are a shade lower.-Gallipoli, and other descriptions, are without variation. RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS. There was a public sale of Rum brought forward last week, consisting of 236 puncheons of Jamaica; the prices were 3d, a 4d. per gallon under the market rates, but the quality was so indifferent, that it affords no tair criterion of the market prices. Rums have, however, been since the sale extremely heavy, and the market currency may certainly be considered ld, to 2d, per gallon lower; the prices were for the lowest, 7 to 15, 3s. 3d, a 3s. 4d.; 17 to 21, 3s. 5d. a 3s. 6d. ; the first lots, 23 to 25, were withdrawn at 5s; one lot, good quality, and 28, sold at 4s. 6d. The market for Brandy is so excedingly heavy, that were sales forced during the present languid demand, a very considerable depression in the prices must be submitted to.-Geneva is declining. INDIGO.-The sale at the India House closed yesterday; the good and fine des criptions have gone off 3d, and middling 46. a 6d. higher than last sale; the ordinary nearly at the same prices. The sale consisted of 7908 chests, of which it is calculated, about one third has been taken in for the proprietors, on account of the reports from India, stating, that there is a great deficiency in the crops, and that the supplies to Great Britain, for the autumn and next spring sales, will not exceed 12,000 chests, HEMP, FLAX, and TALLOW.-The demand for Hemp since our last has rather given way, and prices may be considered a shade lower.-The quantity of Yellow Candle Tallow in London, is so inconsider. able, that the holders have in very few instances submitted to any depression; the market may, however, be stated exceed. ingly beavy.-In Flax there is no variation. The Exchange from St. Petersburg by the ast accounts was stated rather lower. |
