Mr. Grant, leave being granted, moved to take from the table the following resolution: Resolved by the Senate (the House concurring), That we, as representatives of the people of Michigan, hereby express our condemnation of the action of the majority of the late Congress in voting to its members an increase of their pay during the expiring hours of the session, at a time and in a manner to prevent any remonstrance from the people against their action. We applaud the votes of all who opposed the measure, and only regret that they did not refuse to take from the people's treasury the amount of extra pay so voted. Such legislation and action is not what the tax-payers and people of the country demanded or expected, and leads to distrust and dissatisfaction, as a departure from that strict personal and political integrity the people, without respect to party, have a right to expect and demand of their representatives in the National Congress; Which motion prevailed.
