TAXIDERMY

It is easy to learn how to mount birds, animals, game heads and fish, also how to make novelties of deer horns, deer feet, etc., by studying "The Amateur Taxidermist."

You can then mount your own specimens and there is always work for the man who understands taxidermy, mounting birds, game heads, etc., for others, at good prices. Learn this art, then advertise and you will have plenty of work. "The Amateur Taxidermist" gives more information on this subject than any book or correspondence course ever written. It is the work of a practical taxidermist of many years' experience, and gives information which cannot be gotten from "correspondence" courses.

"The Amateur Taxidermist" is finely illustrated with photographic reproductions, showing specimens of mounted birds, animals, game heads, etc., and each lesson is accompanied by a full page plate, consisting of from one to fourteen drawings fully explaining the lesson.

When the dogs came out to the road John caught them, in turn, and chained them. Το the west more than two miles was the river, lined with towering bluffs that were almost mountains. It was in these great elevations that many fox dens existed, and hard driven toxes or wounded ones were pretty sure to avail themselves of these retreats. There they were safe, for the soil was loose sand and dens often ran 20 cr 30 feet deep. Alf was boss and the dogs were to be held until he decided whether to follow or not.

When all the party were gathered, excuses of why we didn't stop the fox were in order; there were if's and and's and many regrets. "Well, it can't be helped," said Winks, "we've lost the fox," for it was generally surmised that it would go straight to one of those secure dens in the river bluffs, this view being strengthened by the fact that after Alf's shot at the game there had been an occasional drop of blood in the trail, showing that the fox was wounded. Even with a slight wound a fox frequently goes to earth soon after being hit.

Uncle Rob "Guessed he would go home; he had been out about long enough and was feeling rather cold," he said.

"I dont' want you to stay out longer than you feel like doing," said Alf, "but I'm not satisfied to go home yet. I think we'll lead the dogs along on the track 'til we get to the bluffs and if the fox hasn't gone in the ground we'll give him a whirl there in the hills. If we don't start this one we may find another and if we do it's liable to run down the river before this wind that's come up. It won't run against the wind and come over to Burr Oak Hollow. If it runs down the river it's liable to cross the road at the foot of Moyer hill and if you were there you might get a shot at it."

"Well, we'll drive along slow and listen for the dogs," said Winks, "but I guess our luck for today is gone."

But during the next hour nothing was heard of the dogs, so Winks went home, had a cup of tea and a bite to eat and lay down to rest, disappointed that he could not have had one more shot at a fox.

In the meantime the others had followed the fox to its den. A drop of blood now and then gave Alf the opinion that the fox had only received a flesh wound.

"I won't kill him," he said, "he'll be out again tonight. It ain't a very valuable pelt he carries anyhow; he looked pretty much faded to me."

"I should say so," John returned, "he looked faded to me as an old buffalo robe. I'll bet he's an old timer.

Another track was soon found that had been made some time in the night. It came from down the river and its course continued up-stream. The dogs would only follow it when led. The game might lay close by or far away. If within a reasonable radius it should be routed, so Alf determined, and they would do their best not to go home empty-handed.

It required just about an hour to track out fox number two and bounce him from his bed under the roots of an overturned tree. The dogs ran him up-stream about a mile and then he swung back and went down past the hunters out of range, while the hills and hollows echoed and re-echoed with the voices of the hotly pursuing dogs. Bugle's voice was deep bass, while Sailor's was high tenor, which he gave out in not very frequent screams, while Bugle bayed steadily as the tick of a clock.

A strong wind was now blowing and the fox ran before it. The hunters hoped it would

double back towards the point from which it had been started; but waited in vain for sounds of the returning dogs, telling in tones that never speak falsely that they are driving the game back to the hunter.

After lunch Wink's chore-boy came into the house excited, saying, "I hear the dogs running straight west of here in Denton's bluffs along the river."

"Then they've brought a fox clear through from where Alf and John started in when we left them," said Winks, "and it has crossed the road at Moyer Hill just as Alf predicted. If the fox follows the old runway of other years it will cross the road we're on when it leaves the lower bluffs belonging to Denton, Simonds and Peck. Hitch up the horse quick and we'll drive up the road to a cut in the hill by Miner's, where they used to cross.

Having arrived at the crossing Winks asked: "Do you hear anything of the dogs?"

"Yes," the boy answered, "they're giving tongue loud and fast as they can, as if they were crowding the fox close."

"Well, he won't stay there long then; I'll bet he'll come through here," said Winks. "I'll get out and hide here and you drive up the road ways."

The old hunter dropped down behind the turnpike, leaving only his head in sight. For all that his hearing was bad his eyesight was keen for a man of his years. Not over ten minutes had elapsed after Winks had settled down in his place of hiding, when he saw the fox break out of the woods and start across the field towards him. Then was when shattered nerves had to be mustered for a supreme effort of accurate aim and steady hand. The fox ran almost exactly on the old time runway. It took Uncle Rob's thoughts back to the days some forty years ago when to kill a fox was a commonplace event, and he was in his full strength and scarcely knew what fatigue meant.

The fox had crossed the field and the dogs are just entering it. The fence at the road presents no opening, so the game endeavors to leap the barrier. He lands with front feet on the top rail. With the old 10 guage gun in readiness and resting on a rock, Uncle Rob meets that momentary sight of the game with a charge of BB shot and it drops back out of view. The chase is ended; a moment ago the fox was a most animated creature, fairly bristling with life and now he lies a bundle of fur and a riddled skull. The prize is a large, full-furred dog fox, bright red with a full stand of guard hairs and a thick, heavy-furred tail tinged with black. Everything denotes an animal in its prime as to

Uncle Rob was the happiest aged man in the county. His heart's desire had been gratified, and what was more fitting than it should be realized on the first of the New Year, on his birthday anniversary, and to kill the fox on the old runway only sixty rods from his house? "I'm content to go now," he told Alf.

"I hope you'll be here to run several foxes yet," Alf replied in feeling tones.

But Uncle Rob shook his head. "I am failing, and I guess this is my last fox hunt. When I'm gone I want you to have Bugle; he's only eight years old and good for some time yet."

The strongest tree goes back to dust and man is no exception to the rule. When the snow was gone and the first robins began to sing "cheer up" and bright yellow crocuses were bursting in bloom from the dooryards, Bugle was chafing under the restraint of his chain, no doubt wondering what had become of his old master, for now he had a new home.

most important point for a RAW FUR SHIPPER to consider is
the RELIABILITY of the house to which he ships.
