In the American army you will find plenty of young men of character-young men who bear rule so high, so fine, so pure, that the whole world is sure to come within the circle of this influence-this influence that pays homage to the royalty of virtue American Mothers.

Advertising is like playing on the harp-there is as much in laying the hand on the strings to stop a vibration, as there is in twanging them to bring out the music.

That's it! To know when to stop is the big point in playing the harp or in advertising.

I'll stop right here. Stein-Bloch Smart Clothes have no equal in style, quality, fit or finish.

Big statement, but true.

OUR employer depends on profits

he sells, how much he sells, is not so
important to him as how much he
satisfies.

Your position is not unlike that of the
man you work for.
How much you
satisfy means much to you.

The only way your employer has of
judging your value is by results. The
only way he can hope to win in busi-
ness is on results.

Your position, as compared with that
of the man you work for, is a mutual
one; and when you overlook this fact
you overlook the fundamental prin-
ciples of personal progress.

OCTOBER 1917

I was taken to task last week by some friendly critics-advertising experts.

They doubted my procedure with reference to unqualifiedly recommending a certain article. advertised in The Silen't Partner.

I immediately turned to the advertisement of Stein-Bloch Smart Clothes and the `chief critic said: Oh! That's different. There's no question about Stein-Bloch leadership.

I have nothing more to

Clothes Logic

A Test of Courage: Wearing last year's suit with a smile and an air of assurance, and no semblance of selfconsciousness.

Protection Against Ridicule: Avoiding the extreme mode whether it be something very much in fashion or something decidedly out of vogue.

Signs of Victory: Our men in khaki.

A Triumph: A boy's first evening dress suit.

False Pretenses: Mourning clothes on a flirtatious widow.

A Bit of Advice: Good clothes are an excellent form of bluff, but for success there must be something to back up the bluff.

Intuition: A woman's knowledge that veils can be beautifiers.

Keys to Character and Ability: The buttons missing from a man's or woman's clothes, and the creases, tears and spots in evidence.

A Comment: Clothes may make the man, but an evening gown unmakes the bony, scrawny woman.

The Origin of Dress

It is frequently said that there is nothing new under the sun, and this is particularly true of dress. For there is seldom a line or a detail brought forth today that cannot be traced to an earlier period. And where a thing is launched as fashion today, its earlier adoption was usually the result of a real or seeming need.

If not the need of convenience, comfort, protection, or economy, then the need or desire was for class distinction, an expression of authority, or an ideal of beauty.
