In trinitate &c. Three sons of Murchu of Connaught made this praise unto Michael. Colman was the eldest of them, and he was a bishop, and the other two were priests. Causa i.e. on their pilgrimage they were going, and a great storm came to them on the Ictian sea, and

'after eating the dinner illic in the robber's house. And after giving thanks to God, the sons of life dwindled post till they were not bigger than infants, as that seemed unto the priest who was with them. An angel came and said to them nisi,' &c.

they reached a certain island, and a great famine came to them. And to save themselves from that famine they made this praise. Or it is to free the island of Rodan from demons: for there was a certain transgressing bishop therein before that, and it is in France; et postea ad Hiberniam venerunt. Incertum est autem in quo tempore factus est. In rhyme it was made, and eleven chapters therein, and two lines in every chapter, and sixteen syllables in each. It is on the rhyme is, because of the omine that is there."

And to

Oengus, son of Tipraite, priest of Cluain Fota Baitan Aba, he it is that made hunc hymnum. In Cluain Fota factus est. Causa autem Adamnan was visiting the churches of Columcille in Ireland, and he came to Uisnech of Meath, and every man ordained, against whom there was a charge in the country, was summoned to him. And the summons came to Oengus on the night of Martin's feast, et timuit valde, ut fecit hunc утпит in honorem Martini, to save him. Venit then Oengus to (the) meeting on the morrow, with his hymn ready by him. Adamnan appeared Martin on the right hand of Oengus, and he, Adamnan, came before him, et honorificavit eum cum osculo, et omnes mirabantur causam honoris, et dixit Adamnan ut vidit Martinum secum, and it was on account of Martin's being along with him that he, Adamnan, gave honour to him. So thus Oengus was saved. Et ostendit ymnum suum et laudavit Adamnan hymnum, et dixit that a venerable aspect (would be) on him who shall sing it going to a meeting or assembly, and that it would be a safeguard against every disease, and heaven (would be the reward) for singing it on lying down and on rising. Translation of the Irish.

Maria mater, &c. And it is in a certain mountain-city in the tribe of Juda near Jerusalem, and this is Zachariah's own city. Ibi Johannes Baptista natus est, and it is to that city that Mary came to visit Elizabeth when she heard of her being pregnant, to wit, in the sixth month. And therein it is that speech was given to Zachariah, and therein it is that Zachariah made the Benedictus, and therein it is that the Magnificat was made. This, however, is the cause, to wit, Mary came to visit Elizabeth, Zachariah's wife, for she had heard of her being pregnant post longissimam sterilitatem, &c.

Translation of the Irish.

Locus, etc. Tempus of Aedán, son of Gabrán, king of Scotland, and of Aed, son of Ainmire, king of Ireland. Mauricius autem vel Phocas he it is who was king of the Romans tunc. The person (was) Columcille de &c., i.e. for asking forgiveness on account of the battle of Cul Dremne, which he broke on Diarmait, son of Cerball, and the other battles which were broken because of him. Vel ut alii dicunt, it was made extemporaneously, to wit, one day Columcille was in Hí, and no one was with him save Boithín, and there was no food with them save a sieve of oats. Then Columcille said to Boithín, "Most noble guests are coming to us to-day, O Boithín" (to wit, Gregory's family who came with presents for him), and he said to Boithín, "stay (here) attending to the guests, so that I may go to the mill." He takes upon him his burden from a certain stone that was in the Reclés (cellula), Blathnat its name, and it remains still, and on it division is made in the refectory. Now heavy to him was his burden, so he made this hymn in alphabetical order from that as far as the mill, i.e. Adjutor laborantium, etc. Now when he put the first feed into the mill, then he began the first chapter, and together he finished grinding the sack(ful) and making the hymn. And it is extemporaneously it was made, sic. In the 565th year after Christ's birth Columcille came to Hiut Beda dicit, etc.

Now the hymn was taken to Gregory eastwards in exchange for the gifts that were received from him, namely, the Cross (i.e. the Great Gem its name) and the hymns of the week. The bearers, however, substituted therein there chapters which Gregory composed i.e. Hic sublatus and Orbem and Vagatur. Now when they began showing the hymn to Gregory, God's angels came and remained standing until that chapter was reached by them; (and) Gregory for his part stood up as far as that. But when that was said the angels were sitting down and Gregory also was sitting down, so that the hymn ended in that wise. So Gregory asked them for their confessions, for he knew that it was they had made the substitution. And they said that it was they. And they had forgiveness for it. And he said that there was no fault in the hymn but the scantiness with which the Trinity was praised per se, though it was praised through its creatures. And that reproof reached Columcille, and that was the cause of composing In te Christe. An
