land. 84 plates

1728

The above is an unusually complete copy, containing the Scotch views, the rare series of plates to Audley End, and the Atlas Anglois. Kip's great work is without a rival. Nowhere is there to be found gathered together such a collection of engravings of the "stately homes of England." Mathematically correct, he at the same time infused no inconsiderable amount of artistic feeling into his work. His bird's-eye-views contain the very finest representations of English pleasure gardens in all their ramifications of parterre and maze, of arbour and grotto.

The eight volumes are common enough, but the two volumes of additions are extremely rare. The two added volumes contain: A Tour through the Isle of Thanet, 1793-Monuments and Painted Glass of upwards of 100 Churches in Kent by P. Parsons, 1794-Nelson (J.), History of St. Mary Islington, 1811-Gough (R.), On the Beauchamp Chapel, Warwick, and the Bedford Missal, 1794-1809-West (T.), Antiquities of Furness, 1774; and Martin's History of Thetford, 1:79. Owing to the difficulty of collating, the set is sold not subject to return; but it is believed to be quite perfect. The stock of the two rare supplementary vols. (vols. IX-X) was partly destroyed by fire, hence their scarcity.

Christopher Saxton, an engraver during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, lived at Tingley near Leeds, Yorkshire, and was servant to Thomas Sekeford, Esq., Master of Requests, and of the Court of Wards. By the encouragement and at the expense of this gentleman, Saxton undertook and published in 1579, a complete set of maps of the counties of England and Wales, dedicated to the Queen, and adorned with the Royal Arms, and those of the promoter, Master Sekeford; the dates on the plates varying from 1573 to 1579. Saxton is commended by Camden and Thoresby, the latter of whom calls his map of Yorkshire the best that ever was made of that county. In the present copy the Leaf of Arms, the "Catalogus Urbium, etc.," 1 leaf, the "Table of Circuits," and a leaf of Index are missing. 980 SMITH (C. J.).
