Robert Crawford, in said township; and so much of any act of assembly of this commonwealth as attaches a portion of said township to Kittanning, as an election district, be and the same is hereby repealed. SECTION 23. That all that part of Branch township, in the county of Schuylkill. Schuylkill, lying west of Chapmanville, in said township, to Rahn's, tavern, on the Minersville road, and south of the west branch of the river Schuylkill, is hereby annexed to the general election district formed under the eighteenth section of an act, entitled "An Act regulating election districts," approved the seventh day of March, one thousand eight hundred and forty-three; and the qualified electors thereof shall hereafter hold their general elections at the house now occupied by Peter Kline, in the town of New Castle, and township of Norwegian: Provided, That the said electors shall vote with the electors authorized under the act aforesaid: And provided, further, That the said electors authorized by this act and the act aforesaid, shall meet at the house named in said acts, on the second Tuesday of October, in each and every year, between the hours of six and nine o'clock in the forenoon, and elect, by ballot, officers to conduct said elections: And provided, further, That the officers so elected under the provisions of this act, shall have power to appoint two clerks, according to existing laws, who shall be qualified voters of said township: And provided, further, That the said election for officers shall be superintended by the constable of Norwegian township, who shall give public notice, by handbills, at least fifteen days next preceding the second Tuesday of October, in each and every year. SECTION 24. The qualified electors of the township of Springfield, Huntingdon. in the county of Huntingdon, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the school house near Hugh Madden's, in said township. SECTION 25. The borough of Lewistown, in the county of Mifflin, Mifflin, Lewisshall be divided into two wards, by a line running through the middle town borough. of the main street; and all that part of said borough lying east of said line, shall be included in and form the East ward; and all that part of said borough lying west of said line, shall be included in and form the West ward; the elections for the East ward shall be held in the commissioners' office at the court house, in said borough, and the elections for the West ward shall be held at the sheriff's office at said court house. SECTION 26. The persons elected judge and inspectors of said borough Election. on the third Friday of March, one thousand eight hundred and fortyfour, shall hold the elections for the East ward during said year; and the said judge and inspectors shall select and appoint suitable persons, residents of the West ward, to be judge and inspectors of said ward during the year aforesaid. SECTION 27. The qualified electors of said borough shall annually Constable. elect two persons, whose names shall be returned to the court of quarter sessions of the peace of said county, for the office of constable, and the said court shall select and appoint one of the persons so returned, to be constable of said borough for the term of one year from the date of his appointment, and until a successor shall be duly appointed and qualified; and the said constable shall be in all respects, and to all intents and purposes, subject to the laws of this commonwealth regulating constables. SECTION 28. The qualified electors of said borough shall, annually, Tax collectors. at the usual time and place of holding elections for judge and inspectors of the general elections, elect two persons, to be returned to the court of quarter sessions of the peace of said county, for the office of collector of Monroe. Clearfield. Berks. Wayne. Huntingdon. Tioga. taxes in and for said borough; and the court shall select and appoint one SECTION 29. It shall be lawful for the qualified electors of the township of Middle Smithfield, in the county of Monroe, annually hereafter to elect three supervisors for said township, at the usual time and place of holding township elections, and the three persons who received the highest number of votes for supervisors, as aforesaid, at the township elections held on the sixteenth day of March last, are hereby duly declared supervisors for said township during the present year, and shall perform all the duties and be subject to all the provisions of law relating to supervisors. SECTION 30. The qualified electors of the borough of Clearfield, in the county of Clearfield, shall hereafter elect their burgess, members of town council, and other borough officers, at the same time that the township elections in said county are held; and the qualified electors, aforesaid, shall meet at the usual place of holding said borough elections, on the last Friday of May next, between the hours of two and six o'clock in the afternoon of said day, and there elect one assessor and election officers, for said borough, for the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-four. SECTION 31. That the qualified electors of the township of Upper Tulpehocken, in the county of Berks, shall meet on the last Friday of May next, at the place of holding said township elections, and then and there elect a justice of the peace for said township, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the election of John Potteiger, elected a member of the state legislature; and said election shall be held and conducted in the mode and manner, and by such officers and persons as is provided by an act of assembly, entitled "A further supplement to an act, entitled An Act providing for the election of aldermen and justices of the peace, and for other purposes,' approved the thirteenth day of June, one thousand eight hundred and forty." SECTION 32. That the qualified electors of the borough of Honesdale, in the county of Wayne, shall hereafter hold their general and borough elections at the court house, in said borough. SECTION 33. That the qualified electors of the township of Blair, in the county of Huntingdon, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the school house, number three, in the town of Newry, in said township. SECTION 34. That the qualified electors of the township of Elkland, in the county of Tioga, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the public house now occupied by D. B. Shoff, in said township. SECTION 35. That the qualified electors of the township of Allison, Clinton. in the county of Clinton, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the court house, in the borough of Lock Haven. SECTION 36. That the qualified electors of the township of Wysox, Bradford. in the county of Bradford, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the house now occupied by Frank Brown, in said township. SECTION 37. That the township of Plymouth, in the county of Montgomery. Montgomery, shall hereafter be a separate election district, and the qualified voters thereof shall hold their general elections at the house now occupied by George K. Ritter, in said township. SECTION 38. The qualified electors of South Creek township, Brad- Bradford. ford county, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the public school house near Asa Gillett's, in said township. SECTION 39. That the qualified voters of the township of Milford, Somerset. in the county of Somerset, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the house now occupied by Michael Frease, in the town of Centreville, in said township. SECTION 40. That the qualified electors of the township of Jackson, Tioga. in the county of Tioga, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the house now occupied by John T. Cleaveland, in said township. SECTION 41. That the qualifield electors of the township of North Bedford. Woodbury, in the county of Bedford, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the Green Spring school house, in the borough of Martinsburg, in said township. SECTION 42. That the township of Glade, in the county of Warren, Warren. shall be a separate election district, and the qualified voters thereof shall hold their general and township elections at the house now occupied by Francis Hook, in said township. SECTION 43. That the qualified electors of the township of Huston, Huntingdon. in the county of Huntingdon, shall hereafter hold their general and township elections at the public school house number six, near the farm of John Longanecker, in said township. SECTION 44. That a new election district is hereby formed out of Dauphin. parts of Halifax and Middle Paxton townships, in the county of Dauphin, to be called Penn, comprised within the following boundaries, viz: Beginning at the south point of Duncan's island; thence up the Juniata river to the head of said island; thence up the branch to the head of the Big island; thence across the Susquehanna river, striking the line between the land of William Reed and Jacob Zearing; thence to the north-east corner of William Reed's farm; thence along the line of said Reed and Zearing, following the line between Newbaker and Zearing, down to Powell's creek; thence across said creek and along the line between the lands of Jones and M'Connell; thence along the line between the lands of Jones and Surgart; thence a straight course to the top of Peter's mountain; thence a straight course so as to strike the line between the lands of William Geiger, deceased, and Gross; thence a straight line to the river; thence up said river to the place of beginning: and the qualified voters residing in said district, shall hold their general elections at the school house on Duncan's island, and it shall be lawful Clark's for said voters, when attending said elections, to pass and repass ferry bridge, free of toll. The qualified voters of Economy township, in Beaver county, residing in the village of Economy, in said township, shall hereafter form a separate election district, and hold their general elections at the hotel in said village of Economy; the qualified voters of said township of Economy, not included in the above district, shall hereafter form a separate election district, and hold their general elections at the house of George C. Minis, in said township; the judge and inspectors, elected on the third Friday of March last, in said township of Economy, shall serve as such in that election district in which they may reside, and such other judge and inspectors as may be necessary to conduct the elections in both the districts above named, shall be elected by the qualified voters present, on the morning of the second Tuesday of October next, agreeably to the existing laws of this commonwealth, in such case made and provided. SECTION 46. That so much of any act of assembly of this commonwealth, as provides that Horracetown, in the county of Tioga, shall form a separate election district for election and school purposes, be and the same is hereby repealed, and hereafter Horracetown aforesaid shall be annexed to the township of Lawrence, in said county, so far as relates to election and school purposes. SECTION 47. That the qualified voters of the borough of Claysville, in the county of Washington, shall be entitled, at the spring election, in one thousand eight hundred and forty-five, and annually thereafter, to elect one constable, subject to the provisions of existing laws. SECTION 48. That hereafter all general and special elections in the district of Spring Garden, in the county of Philadelphia, shall be held in the several wards, at the places where the constable elections are now held, except in the Second ward, where all such elections shall be held at the house now occupied by Jacob Kinnard, in Callowhill street: Provided, That it shall be lawful for the court of quarter sessions, upon the petition of fifty or more qualified voters of any one of said wards, should they deem it expedient to change the place of holding said elections, at some other place within the ward, so as better to promote the public convenience. SECTION 49. The judges, inspectors and clerks of the several wards of all such elections, shall meet together at the Commissioners' hall in said district, on the second day after any such election, and then and there add together the number of votes given for each person voted for, and make out the returns and appoint one of their number a return judge, in the manner now prescribed by the laws of this commonwealth. SECTION 50. That the time for holding the borough elections in, the borough of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill, shall be on the days now fixed by law, and the polls shall be opened between the hours of eight and ten o'clock in the morning, and close at seven o'clock in the evening; and it shall be the duty of the judges and inspectors elected at the March elections next preceding the borough elections, to serve as the officers of the respective wards for which they shall have been so elected at the borough elections, except that the judges and inspectors elected for the North-West ward, as aforesaid, shall serve as the officers of the borough elections held in and for the North ward, in said borough. SECTION 51. That the qualified voters of the township of Salt Lick, in the county of Fayette, shall, at their spring election in 1845, determine by ballot at what place they will thereafter hold their general and spring elections in said township. SECTION 52. That the qualified voters of North-East ward, in the Berks. borough of Reading, in the county of Berks, at their next general Reading borough. election shall determine by ballot whether their general and borough elections shall be held at the house of John Miller or at the house of Samuel B. Graul; and each qualified voter may vote a ticket, on the outside of which shall be written or printed the words "election ward," and on the inside house of John Miller," or "house of Samuel B. Graul;" and the said elections shall hereafter be held at the place the majority may vote for, until otherwise determined by law; and the result of said election shall be certified by the judge and inspectors of the election, and filed in the office of the court of quarter sessions of the said county. SECTION 53. That the qualified electors of Paradise township, in the Lancaster. county of Lancaster, shall hereafter hold their township and general elections at the Black Horse tavern, in said township, now occupied by John Rowe. SECTION 54. That the general and township elections in the township Luzerne. of Hanover, in the counties of Luzerne, shall hereafter be held at the school house near the residence of Bateman Downing. SECTION 55. That from and after the passage of this act, three-fourths Armstrong. of an acre of ground now belonging to P. Hutchinson and John Furnes, Borough of Kitbounded by Walnut street, certain alleys, and the turnpike road in the taning. borough of Kittanning, Armstrong county, be and the same is hereby attached to the borough of Kittanning; and the persons now residing, or that may hereafter reside on said land, shall enjoy all the privileges and be subject to all the laws relating to said borough. AN ACT To authorize the auditor general and state treasurer to receive state stock at par in payment of a judgment the commonwealth holds against Robert B. Wright, late collector at Columbia. WHEREAS, Robert B. Wright, in one thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven, as collector of canal and railroad tolls at Columbia, credited the Washington line, (a boat and car company,) under the full assurance, from their general credit with business men, as well as from the collateral property assigned, that the company was unquestionably solvent: And whereas, The said company did fail, by which means the said Robert B. Wright became indebted to the commonwealth in the sum of fifteen hundred twenty-seven dollars and fourteen cents, for which sum he has confessed judgment in favor of the commonwealth: therefore, Preamble. |
