"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."-Prov. ix. 10.

L

ORD, have mercy when we strive

To save through Thee, our souls alive; When our wakening thoughts begin First to loathe our cherish'd sin, And our weary spirits fail, And our aching brows are pale, Oh then have mercy! Lord! Lord! have mercy when we know First how vain this world below; When the earliest gleam is given Of Thy bright but distant Heaven, When our darker thoughts oppress, Doubts perplex and fears distress, Oh then have mercy! Lord!

"The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom."-Prov. xv. 33.

ETERNAL God, we look to Thee,

To Thee for help we fly;

Thine eyes alone our wants can see,
Thy hand alone supply.

Lord, let Thy fear within us dwell,
Thy love our footsteps guide:
That love will all vain love expel;

That fear, all fear beside.

Not what we wish, but what we want,
Oh let Thy grace supply:

The good unask'd in mercy grant;

The ill, though ask'd, deny.

Merrick (altered).

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

"

Isa. xl. 8.

THE grass which now in verdure bright

Doth nature's scene array,

Alas! soon withereth from our sight;
Thus earth's fair things decay.

But God's eternal Word, o'er all

Remains for ever sure;

Though earth's fair treasures droop and fall,

That word shall still endure.

"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and

we are not saved."

Jer. viii. 20.

LORD, in Thy name Thy servants plead,
And Thou hast sworn to hear;

Thine is the harvest, Thine the seed,
The fresh and fading year.

Thine too by right, and ours by grace,
The wondrous growth unseen;

The hopes that soothe, the fears that brace,
The love that shines serene.

So grant the precious things brought forth
By sun and moon below,

That Thee in Thy new heaven and earth
We never may forego.
