66 Hope thou in God."-Ps. xlii. II.

COMMIT thou all thy griefs

ways into His hands,

To His sure truth and tender care
Who earth and heaven commands.
Give to the winds thy fears,
Hope and be undismay'd;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears;
God shall lift up thy head.

Through waves, and clouds, and storms,
He gently clears the way :

Wait thou His time-the darkest night
Shall end in brightest day.

J. Wesley, from P. Gerhardt.

"If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me."-Job ix. 20.

HOLINESS! I've none to plead,

Sinfulness in all I see;

I can only bring my need,-
"God be merciful to me!"
Broken heart, and downcast eyes,
Dare not lift themselves to Thee,
Yet Thou canst interpret sighs,—
"God be merciful to me!"

There is One beside the throne,
And my only hope and plea
Are in Him, and Him alone,—
"God be merciful to me."

Monsell.

"If iniquity be in thine heart, put it far away."

AF

Job xi. 14.

H! give me, Lord, the tender heart,
That trembles at the approach of sin;
A godly fear of sin impart,

Implant, and root it deep within;
That I may dread Thy gracious power,
And never dare offend Thee more!

Thou know'st the way to bring me back,
My fallen spirit to restore;

O for Thy truth and mercy's sake,
Forgive, and bid me sin no more!

The ruins of my soul repair,

And make my heart a house of prayer!

SWE

WEET are the thoughts that savour of content;

The quiet mind is richer than a crown;

Sweet are the nights in careless slumber spent,
The poor estate scorns fortune's angry frown.
The homely house that harbours quiet rest,
The cottage that affords no pride nor care.
The mean that 'grees with country music best,
The sweet consort of mirth's and music's fare:
Obscured life sets down a type of bliss;
A mind content both crown and kingdom is.
Robert Green, 1560.

"If sinners entice thee consent thou not." Prov. i. 10.

FIGHTING the whole day long—

With a very tired hand;

With only my armour strong

The shelter in which I stand.

Only the Lord can hear,
Only the Lord can see

The struggle within, how dark and drear
Though quiet the outside be.

Lord, fix my eyes upon Thee,

And fill my heart with Thy love; And keep my soul till temptations flee, And the light breaks forth above.

WHY

1 Kings xviii. 21.

halt thus, oh deluded heart, Why waver longer in thy choice?

Is it so hard to choose the part

Offer'd by Heaven's entreating voice? God crowneth no divided heart;

To Him, oh hallow all thy life,

Who loveth Jesus but in part,

He works himself much pain and strife.

Oh help each other, hasten on,

Behold the goal is nigh at hand, The battle-field shall soon be won,

Your King shall soon before you stand! To calmest rest He leads you now, And sets His crown upon your brow.

Lehr.
