Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with him."

Isa. iii. 10.

OUR night may be a starless night,

Our path a tangled maze;

But yet, our eyes shall soon behold
The morning's golden blaze;
Keeping our gaze upon the East,

Leaving the night behind,

With the will to find the light increased
And strengthen'd in our mind;
The sun shall rise, the gloom depart,
Lost in the strength of day,

For earnest love, and trustful heart,
Are sure to find a way.

"Secret things belong unto the Lord our God."

AND is it even thus?

Deut. xxix. 29.

Are these the words

Of God's own Book; and do they speak the mind

Of Him, the High, the Wise, the Holy? Then What must we say of some, who, in their pride, Proclaim themselves His people, and look down With scornful pity upon humbler souls

Who worship Him in secret?

Rev. D. S. Wayland.

"Return unto Me, for I have redeemed thee." Isa. xliv. 22.

WOULD return! for I do not love
The paths where my straying footsteps rove;
This world's dark treachery oft I prove:
I would return!

I would return! for my feet are torn
With many a pricking brier and thorn:
And in weariness and grief I mourn:
I would return!

But how return?-can I go alone
To that dazzling high eternal throne
Where sits the King in light unknown?
Can I return?

I will return! at His feet I'll fall,
And tell Him my fear, and sin, and thrall,
Yes, empty I'll go to Him for all-
Thus I'll return.

"Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people."

Prov. xiv. 34.

O forth, and jointly speed the time,

Go

By good men pray'd for long,

When Christian States grown just and wise,
Will scorn revenge and wrong;

When earth's oppress'd and savage tribes
Shall cease to pine or roam,

All taught to prize these English words,
Faith, Freedom, Heaven, and Home.

J. G. Lyons.

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him." Ps. xxxviii. 7.

PRAY; though the gift you ask for,

May never comfort your fears,
May never repay your pleading,
Yet pray, and with hopeful tears;
An answer, not that you long for,
But diviner, will come one day;
Your eyes are too dim to see it,
Yet strive, and wait, and pray.

"Salvation is of the Lord."

Jonah ii. 9.

SHOULD Thy mercy send me

Sorrow, toil, and woe;

Or should pain attend me
On my path below;
Grant that I may never

Fail Thy hand to see;
Grant that I may ever

Cast my care on Thee.

When my last hour cometh,
Fraught with strife and pain,

When my dust returneth

To the dust again;

On Thy truth relying,

Through that mortal strife,

Jesus, take me dying

To eternal life.

"Sanctify the Lord God of hosts Himself, and let Him be your fear."

Isa. viii. 13.

not far from me, oh my strength,
Whom all my times obey;

Take from me anything Thou wilt,
But go not Thou away.

And let the storm that does Thy work,
Deal with me as it may.

When

am feeble as a child,

And flesh and heart give way,
Then on Thy everlasting strength
With passive trust I stay.

And the rough wind becomes a song,
The darkness shines like day.

Sanctify yourselves; for to-morrow the Lord will do wonders among you."

Joshua iii. 5.

CHAFED and worn with worldly care,

Sweetly, Lord, my heart prepare ;

Bid this inward tempest cease;

Jesus, come and whisper peace.
Hush the whirlwind of my will,
With Thyself my spirit fill;
End in calm this busy week,
Let the Sabbath gently break.
Disentangle me from time,
Lift me to a purer clime;
Let me cast away my load,
Let me now draw nigh to God,
Seal my spirit while I rest,

Give me dreamings pure and blest.
