WHEN travelling (whether in my own or other dioceses) for the episcopal work with which I was intrusted for about twenty-one years, I was thankful to find the practice. of family prayer in almost every house in which from day to day I was received. What was a rare practice in my youth is now all but universal in some shape or other. But I was struck also with the degree in which the reading of the Old Testament is too generally neglected. Christians act as if our Lord referred to the New Testament when He said, 'Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.'
