Le present traité fera ratifié par fa majefté le Roi de la Grand Bretagne, et par sa majesté le Roi de Pruffe, et les lettres de ratification en bonne forme feront delivrées, de part et d'autre dans le tems d'un mois ou plûtôt fi faire fe peut, a compter du jour de la fignature du present traité.

S the differences, which have arifen in America, between the king of Great Britain and the most Chriftian king, and the confequences of which become every day more alarming, give room to fear for the public tranquillity of Europe; his majefty the king of Great Britain, elector of Brunswick Lunenburgh, &c. and his majesty the king of Pruffia elector of Brandenburgh, attentive to an object fo very interefting, and equally defirous of preferving the peace of Europe in general, and that of Germany in particular, have refolved to enter into fuch measures, as may the most effectually contribute to fo defirable an end; and, for this purpose they have refpectively authorised their minifters plenipotentiary, viz. In the name, and on the part of his Britannic majefty, his privy counsellors, Philip, earl of Hardwicke, chancellor of Great Britain; John, earl of Granville, prefident of the council; Thomas Holles, duke of Newcastle, firft commiffioner of the treasury; Robert, earl of Holderness, one of the principal fecretaries of state; Gg 2 and

and Henry Fox, another of the principal fecretaries of state; and in the name, and on the part, of his Pruffian majefty, the Sieur Lewis Michell, his chargé d'affaires at the court of his Britannic majesty; who, after having mutually communicated their full powers, have agreed upon the following articles.

ARTICLE I.

There shall be, between the faid most ferene kings, a perfect peace and mutual amity, notwithstanding the troubles that may arife in Europe, in confequence of the abovementioned differences; fo that neither of the contracting parties fhall attack, or invade, directly or indirectly, the territories of the other; but, on the contrary, fhall exert, each of them, their utmost efforts, to prevent their refpective allies from undertaking any thing against the faid territories in any manner whatever.

ARTICLE

IL.

If, contrary to all expectation, and in violation of the peace which the high contracting parties propofe to maintain by this treaty in Germany, any foreign power fhould cause) troops to enter into the faid Germany, under any pretexte whatsoever; the two high contracting parties fhall unitemol their forces to punish this infraction of the peace, and maintain the tranquillity of Germany, according to the purport of the present treaty.

The high contracting parties renew expressly all the treaties of alliance and guaranty, which actually fubfift between " them, and particularly the defenfive alliance and mutual guaranty concluded at Weftminfter between their Britannic, and Pruffian majefties the 18th of November 1742, the convention entered into between their faid majefties at Hanover the 26th of Auguft 1745, and the act of acceptation of his Pruffian majefty of the guaranty of his Britannic majefty of the 13th of October 1746.

The prefent treaty fhall be ratified by his majefty the king of Great Britain, and his majesty the king of Pruffia; and the letters of ratification in due form fhall be delivered on both fides within the space of one month, or fooner if poffible, reckoning from the day of figning the prefent treaty.

In witness whereof, we the under-figned, furnished with the full powers of their majefties the kings of Great Britain, and Pruffa, have, in their names, figned the prefent treaty, and thereto fet our feals. Done at Weftminfter the fixteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord 1756.

Separate Article belonging to the Treaty with the King of Pruffia, 16 January, 1756.

Article fecret & feparé.

SOMME la convention de neutralité, fignée en date d'aujourdhui par les miniftres de fa majefté le Roi de la Grande Bretagne, et de fa majefté de Roi de Pruffe, munis de pleinpouvoirs neceffaires pour cet effet, ne regarde que l'Allemagne, cette convention ne doit point être étendue aux paix-bas Autrichiens et leurs dependances, qui ne doivent point etre cenfés compris dans la presente convention de neutralité fous quelque pretexte que cela puiffe être; d'autant plus que fa majefté de Roi de Pruffe n'a garanti, dans le huitieme article de la paix de Drefde, a fa majefte l'imperatrice reine de Hongrie et de Bohéme, que les etats qu'elle poffede en Allemagne.

Cette article fecret et feparé aura la même force, que s'il étoit inferé, de mot a mot, dans la prefente convention de neutralité fignée aujourdhui: et les ratifications en feront exchangées dans le même têms que celles de la dite convention. En foy de quoi nous fouffignées, munis de pleinpouvoirs de leurs majeftés les Rois de la Grande Bretagne et de Prufse, avons, en leur noms, figné le prefent article secret et separé, et y avons appofe les cachets de nos armes.

DECLARATION.

FIN de terminer les differends qui peuvent s'etre elevés entre leurs majeftés Pruffienne et Britannique, il est declaré, que défque fa Majefté Pruffienne levera l'arrêt mis fur la dette de la Silefie, et fera payer aux fujets de fa Majefté Britannique ce qui leur en refte dû felon le contract original, tant interefts que principal; fa Majefté Britannique promet et s'engage de fon coté de faire payer a fa Majefté Pruffienne la fomme de vingt mille livres fterlin, en extinction de toute pretenfion de fa dit Majefté ou de fes jujets à la charge de fa Majefté Britannique fous quelque pretexte que ce puiffe être. Fait a Westminster le feizième jour de Janvier, l'an de Grace 1756.

A by minifters majefty king

Britain, and of his majesty the king of Pruffia, furnished with the full powers necellary for that purpose, relates only to Germany; this convention must not be understood to extend to the Auftrian low-countries and their dependencies, which ought not to be confidered as comprized in the prefent convention of Neutrality, under any pretext whatfoever; the rather, as his majefty the king of Pruffia hath not, in the eighth article of the peace of Drefden, guarantied to her majefty, the empress queen of Hungary and Bohemia, any thing but the dominions which the poffeffes in Germany.

This fecret and feparate article fhall have the fame force as if it had been inferted, word for word, in the prefent convention of neutrality figned this day; and the ratifications of it fhall be exchanged at the fame time with those of the said convention.

In witness whereof we the under-figned, furnished with the full-powers of their majefties the kings of Great Britain and Pruffia, have, in their names, figned the present secret and feparate article, and thereto fet our feals.

Done at Westminster the fixteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord 1756.

DECLARATIO N.

In order to prevent any difputes that might arife between their Pruffian and Britannic majefties, it is hereby declared, that as foon as his Pruffian majefty fhall have taken off the attachment laid upon the Silefia debt, and caused to be paid to his Britannic majesty's fubjects what remains due to them of that debt, as well intereft as principal, according to the original contract; his Britannic majesty promises and engages, on his part, to cause to be paid to his Pruffian majefty the fum of twenty thoufand pounds fterling, in full fatisfaction of every claim, which his faid majefty or his fubjects may have againft his Britannic majefty, under any pretext whatsoever, Done at Weftminfter the fixteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord 1756.

'AUTANT que le feizième jour de Janvier 1756, il fut conclu et figné entre leurs Majeftés Britannique et Pruffienne un traité, dont lés ftipulations tendoient à conferver la paix general de l'Europe, et celle de l'Allemagne en particulier: et comme depuis ce periode, la France a non feulement envahi l'empire avec des armées nombreuses, et attaqué leurs fufdites Majeftés et leur alliés, mais a auffi fufcité d'autres puiffances à en agir de même; et qu'il eft notoire, que les efforts extraordinaires fait par fa Majefté Pruffienne pour se defendre contre le nombre d'ennemis qui l'ont affailli de tant de côtes à lafois, ont occafióne de fraix extremement onereux, pendant que, de l'autre coté, fes revenus ont eté fort diminués dans les parties de fes etats qui ont eté le fiege de la guerre; et leurs majeftés ayant refolus mutuellement a continuer leurs efforts pour leur defense et fureté reciproques, pour le recouvrement de leur poffeffions, pour la protection de leur alliés, et pour le maintien de libertés du corps Germanique: Sa Majesté Britannique s'eft determinée en confequence de ces confiderations à donner un secours immediat, en argent, à fa Majefté Pruffienne, comme le plus prompt et le plus efficace, et leurs fufdites Majeftés ent jugé, convenable qu'il fû fait la deflus une convention
