Tis floating 'midst day's setting glories; Night,

Night, and the dawn, bright day, and thoughtful eve,
All time, all bounds, the limitless expanse,
As one vast mystic instrument, are touch'd
By an unseen, living Hand, and conscious chords
Quiver with joy in this great jubilee.
The dying hear it, and, as sounds of earth
Grow dull and distant, wake their passing souls
To mingle in this heavenly harmony.

YE golden lamps of heaven, farewell,

The Father of eternal light

E mourn for those who toil

The slave who ploughs the main,

For those whom, in the world's hard race

O'er-wearied and unblest,
A host of restless phantoms chase,--

Why mourn for those who rest?
We mourn for those who sin,

Bound in the tempter's snare, Whom syren Pleasure beckons in

To prisons of despair ;

Whose hearts, by whirlwind passions torn,

Are wrecked on folly's shore ;
But why in sorrow should we mourn

For those who sin no more?

We mourn for those who weep,

Whom stern afflictions bend,
With anguish o'er the lowly sleep

Of lover or of friend;
But they to whom the sway

Of pain and grief is o'er,
Whose tears our God hath wiped away-

Oh mourn for them no more !

UNMURMURING SUBMISSION.

I saw, in sable weeds, a gentle pair Lingering with fond regard at evening's close,

Beside a little grave fresh swelling there:

Silent they stood ---serene their thoughtful air ;

There fell no tear, no vain complaint arose ; Faith seem'd to prompt the unutterable prayer,

And to their view the eternal home disclose.

Next Sabbath brought me where the flow'ret lay,
Record of high descent the marble bore,
Heir of a noble house, and only stay ;
And these words, gather'd from the Bible's store-
“ The Lord hath given, the Lord hath ta'en away,
His holy name be blessed evermore!”
