Born in 1831, in Normandy, the native province of the author of' this book also, M. Gouin was educated at the College of Seez, completed his philosophical studies in the German universities, failed in his attempt to learn the German language by the old classical method, came back to France, watched carefully a little nephew who within three years had learned his native tongue and made the discovery of the system which we have adopted with some modifications. M. Gouin returned to Germany, lived for many years in Berlin, enjoying the friendship of A. Von Humboldt, and holding the position of Professor of French to the Berlin Court.
