My LØRD,
T was Your LORDSHIP's opinion

and encouragement that occafioned the first appearing of this Poem in the folio edition, which from thence has been so well receive ed, that notwithstanding the price of it was four times greater than before, the sale increased double the number every year. The work is

ed; and I, having the honour to hear Your LORDSHIP say, that a smaller edition of it would be grateful to the world, immediately refolved

UI legis AMISSAM PARADISUM, grandia Magni

Carmina Miltoni, quid nisi cun&ta legis ?
Res cun&tas, & cunctarum primordia rerum

Et fata, & fines, .continet iste liber.
Intima panduntur magni penetralia mundi,

Scribitur & toto quicquid in orbe latet ;
Terræque, tractusque maris, cælumque profundum,

Sulphureumque EREBI, flammivomumqe specus ;
Quæquecolunt terras, pontumque,& TARTARIcæca;

Quæque colunt summi lucida regna poli :
Et quodcunque ullis conclusum eit finibus usquam,

Et fine fine CHAOS, & fine fine Deus:
Et fine fine magis, fi quid magis est fine fine,

In CHRISTO erga homines conciliatus amor.
Hæc qui fperaret, quis crederet efle futura ?

Et tamen hæc hodie terra BRITANNA legit.
O quantos in bella Duçes! que protulit arma!

Quæ canit & quanta prælia dira tuba!
Cæleftis acies ! atque in certamine cælum !

Et quæ cæleftes pugna deceret agros !
Quantus in æthereis tollit fe LUCIFER armis !

Atque ipfo graditur vix MichÆLE minor !
Quantis, & quam funeftis concurritur iris,
Dum ferus hic ftellas protegit, ille rapit !

Dum vulsos montes ceu tela reciproqua, torquent,

Et non mortali desuper igne pluunt:
Stat dubius cui le parti concedat OLYMPUS,

Et metuit pugnæ non fupereffe fuæ.
At simul in cælis MESSIÆ insignia fulgent,

Et currus animes, armaque digna DEO,
Horrendumque rotæ ftriderit, & læva rotarum

Erumpunt torvis fulgura luminibus,
Et flammæ vibrant, & vera tonitrua sauco

Admiftis flammis infonuere polo:
Excidit attonitis mens omnis, & impetus omnis,

Et cassis dextris irrita tela cadunt;
Ad pænas fugiunt, & ceu foret Orcus asylum,

Infernis 'certant condere se tenebris. Cedite ROMANI fcriptores, cedite GRAII,

fama recens vel celebravit annus. Hæc quicunque leget tantum cecinisse putabit
