For the working classes we confidently anticipate a social condition far in advance of their present state; we have earnestly at heart the people's happiness and the people's elevation; but we shall not allow our warm sympathies and earnest wishes in this direction to betray us into any faithless compromise of the principles of economic science.

Our object in literature will be analogous to our aim in politics. We wish as before to secure a more constant reference to ascertained principle than we think is now common; but, at the same time, we shall not try to apply arbitrary canons to all writers and all ages, but rather to examine and describe the real features of great literary nations and writers, and explain the manner in which the genius and circumstances of each have influenced the works they have bequeathed to us.

In two points, moreover, it will be our endeavour to avoid errors which have been much and justly complained of in the conduct of other Quarterly Organs. We .purpose to study brevity on all topics which will not justify length-and to give to the lighter departments of Literature that share to which they are fairly entitled in a, Esq., M.P. રી EDWARD WILSON, Esq.

Effect of mere

VERITABLY GOOD TEA,

Like good wine, good furniture, and good everything else, is generally rather a dif.
thing to be met with. It is particularly scarce now, in consequence of the disturbed
of the Chinese Empire. Though the imports of Tea into this country still conti
large, the quality of the supply is very common, and the Tea itself is more gener
damaged than has ever yet been known.

There is no doubt, however, that there is plenty of Good Tea in this country, and owness of price. much to be regretted that lowness of price has forced into consumption a lot of stuff, at a gift, and that the general practice of supplying inferior Tea has contented m purchasers to pay an unnecessarily high price to obtain Good Tea.

The Teas supplied at Number One.

[blocks in formation]

Avoiding alike extravant charges and a deceptive appearance of cheapness, our atar tion will always continue to be directed to supplying the public with Teas of only " quality, and to supply these at the most moderate prices possible.

The Teas referred to in our List are certain kinds possessing, according to the pr. more or less of that particular flavour found by experience to be most agreeable

consumers.

The lower priced Teas are strong and useful, but have not much flavour.

The middle-priced Teas are the best of the kinds generally drunk. They are full, rr in flavour, excellent in quality, and generally please.

The higher-priced Teas are selected from the most choice parcels imported. These ar are seldom supplied by ordinary dealers. A few well-known houses at the West-en: town supply them, but at extravagant charges.

The price of every Tea, from the lowest to the highest, is the most moderate that particular quality can possibly be sold at.

The following sorts will be found to meet the wants of most purchasers:
