PREFACE.

THE publisher of this little work is aware that there are those, who, on viewing some of his books intended for juvenile readers, will conclude they are not suitably adapted to children; but let such consider children of every growth read them. "Men are but children of a larger growth ;" and even some of the smaller children have taste and judgment sufficient to be pleasingly and profitably entertained with sounder and deeper matter than many people suppose. "Facts are" not only "stubborn things," but they are pleasing, although not so high seasoned as visionary romance. The publisher has no wish to lead his readers to contemplate the renowned battle of Tom Thumb and Bumble Bee, nor the exploits of Jack the Giant Killer, nor to entertain them in the Valley of Diamonds, nor yet to crack their cratiums against the moon in visionary and ærial voyages after Fairies or Hobgoblins, &c. The delight in the marvellous is innate in human nature; it is common to the old as well as the young but it is not necessary on this account to set fancy at work to entice mortals quite out of their sphere, and so to vitiate the appetite that it never more can be entertained with real truth. There is enough of the marvellous and wonderful to engage the
