The monument to LEIGH HUNT, represented in the above sketch, was erected over the grave of the essayist in the summer of 1869, and was inaugurated by Lord Houghton, D.C.L., on the 19th of October, in the same year, the eighty-fifth anniversary of the author's birth. It was designed and executed by Mr Joseph Durham, A.R.A., and was erected by subscription, to which persons of all shades of opinion, and of various ranks of life, contributed. The credit of suggesting this testimony to the merits of LEIGH HUNT is due to Mr S. C. Hall, who proposed, in the Art Journal, the opening of a subscription-list.
