THE EIGHTEENTH EDITION.

THE present Edition differs in some respects from those previously published. The pages of Examples of the Writing of the System" in all the recent editions were printed from copper-plates engraved in the last century, and the characters were found to be inconveniently small and crowded for the learner. A new series of plates, for the examples and also for the alphabet, arbitrary characters, &c., has therefore been prepared by the aid of photolithography, and at the same time an endeavour has been made to adapt the instructions, both in fulness and in simplicity, to the requirements of a student.

The system remains in all essentials unchanged, but various slight modifications not affecting its fundamental character have been introduced from time to time during the long period in which it has been in use, and have been so generally adopted in practice
