PREFACE.

It was frequently the custom in ancient monasteries to copy chronicles of established reputation, and insert in them whatever additional information of a sufficiently important character could be obtained from the members and records of the house in which the copies were taken. The scriptorium of the Monastery of Abingdon has left us a copy of Hemingford's Chronicle with additions of this kind, now preserved in the Public Library at Cambridge, under the press-mark Dd. ii. 5. A fac-simile from the MS. is given at the commencement of this work, which is a fine folio volume on vellum of the fourteenth century.

Hemingford's Chronicle being easily accessible to all readers, having been printed by Gale, it has not been considered necessary to reprint the whole manuscript, but merely those portions of it which are peculiar to itself, and are not in the other copies of the Chronicle. Owing to this arrangement, the following pages are necessarily a collection of shreds and patches, without much continuous narrative and it will also explain the apparent incompleteness of some parts.

I have endeavoured to give an exact copy of the original manuscript, with all its blunders. A few corrections will be found at the end of the volume, and some additional remarks are given on the next page.

The translation was executed by a graduate of Oxford, who declines allowing his name to appear. In this part of the work, I am answerable only for a few notes, and the translations of the AngloNorman documents. The translation is, I fear, occasionally inaccurate in its interpretation of phrases not found in classical Latin.

J. O. HALLIwell.
