PREFACE.

The completion of another volume of the Family Friend again introduces us, in our Editorial character, to the especial notice of the domestic circle, to whose instruction and amusement we have devoted ourselves with increased exertions and renewed pleasure.

It is gratifying to an Editor, as each returning season closes upon his past labours, enabling him to recommence them with the encouraging assurance that he has won the approbation of his readers,—that his efforts to render the important truths of science attractive to the young mind, and to inculcate, even amidst the most playful sallies of imagination, sound and virtuous principles, have been duly appreciated. The numerous letters received from individuals who have taken a warm interest in the Family FRIEND, from the commencement of its career, and who have watched its progress with earnest solicitude and satisfaction, is a convincing proof that we have not faltered in our endeavours for the public good. Nine volumes of the Family Friend have now passed the ordeal of criticism, and have come forth from the “ fiery furnace” with increased honour and favour. Embracing, as the work now does, a wide range of usefulness-being, in fact, an indispensable companion to every household, a domestic text-book, in which each member of a family will find his wants in a materiál, as well as an intellectual sense, supplied—no higher claims to appreciation could be urged. It is needless to state that the Editor is assisted in his labours by authors of eminent ability. The new features which are constantly introduced in the pages of the Family Friend are the result of much experience, and are displayed in a clear and attractive manfier, calculated to win the attention of the most indolent mind, and direct it to important truths.

With regard to our future arrangements, we may state that the “Mother's MISTAKE,”- -a Tale written expressly for the Family Friend, by the distinguished authoress, Mrs. Ellis,—will be continued throughout the next volume, with illustrations by an eminent artist. The conclusion of a WINTER IN SpitzBERGEN, a translation from the German, and another series of Stories For The Young will also appear.

We propose giving a series of papers upon CALISTHENICS, which will be carefully written with regard to the delicate organization of the gentler sex, under the guidance of an able and experienced teacher of the Art; and the whole will be supervised by a medical man previous to publication.

A few Chapters will also be especially addressed to the youthful readers of the Family Friend on the Courtesies of Society, by the authoress of the valuable papers on ETIQUETTE, published in one of our early volumes.

Natural History will occupy an important position in the next volume. A series of articles on the Animals of Great Britain will appear, from the pen of a Lady distinguished in the literary world.

Art and Science will likewise particularly engage our attention. Carefully executed Engravings, illustrative of modern discoveries, will be given, together with a continuation of PROFESSOR FARADAY's Lectures on Popular Science; which, by the Professor's permission, are reported expressly for the Family Friend. Added to these, there will be a continuation of the Familiar LecTURES ON Practical Science, which have already appeared in previous volumes, together with useful receipts for the Amateur in Art, and the Mechanic.

The Work-Table Department, under the superintendence of Mrs. Pullan, will receive an accession of pleasing novelties from France and Germany. The patterns will be selected with great care, and arrangements are being made to supply the earliest information of real interest on these subjects from continental sources.

Herr Harrwitz will continue to direct the Chess Department.

Besides these more prominent topics, the Family Friend will contain its usual abundant amount of valuable information on Household Matters, B10GRAPHY, Poetry, and Miscellaneous reading.

Those who desire a neat and uniform style of binding, can have covers, on application to any Bookseller, together with any back Numbers of the work. Complete sets of the Family Friend may likewise be obtained.

The Family Tutor, which may be termed a useful Companion to the Family Friend, being under the same editorial management, is recommended to the notice of our readers. The following subjects are in course of publication in the Fifth volume. Natural Philosophy, illustrated. Papers upon the First Principles of Chemistry, by Professor Silliman, illustrated. A System of Elocution, with special reference to Gesture, to the Treatment of Stammering, and Defective Articulation. A course of Lessons in French. Natural History and Chronology of the Months, illustrated. Lessons in Drawing, illustrated by diagrams. These subjects are varied by miscellaneous matters, calculated to form a pleasing addition to those subjects which are specially introduced.
