PREFACE.

It is hoped that this Reading Book will be found specially adapted to the advancing wants of Elementary Education.

The same plan has been followed as in the earlier books of the Series, of LEAVING NOTHING UNEXPLAINED.

EXPLANATORY NOTES are appended, as before, to each lesson.

DIFFICULT WORDS in each lesson are ACCENTED and EXPLAINED. A separate List has been given of NEARLY ALL THE DIFFICULT WORDS in the LANGUAGE, for SPELLING and DICTATION.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES of the Authors quoted have been given. SCIENCE LESSONS, by the MOST EMINENT WRITERS of the DAY, are freely interspersed.

There is also a distinct Series of SIMPLE LESSONS on SCIENCE illustrating the subjects required for special payments.

As HEALTH is the grand condition of usefulness and comfort in
Life, a series of Lessons is given on THE FOODS WE USE.
ENGLISH COMPOSITION has a distinct space devoted to it.
BRITISH BIOGRAPHY is illustrated by a wide selection of Condensed
Notices of the most famous of our fellow-countrymen of all
ages.

In a Free Country no faculty needs cultivation more than that of proper ELOCUTION, and particular attention has therefore been given to the subject. Hints and Principles, with copious extracts for their practical application, are supplied. It has been, throughout, the aim of the compiler to form a manly Christian character in those who may use these Reading Books, and this has been carefully kept in view in the present one.

It needs only be added, that a large number of the Lessons have been WRITTEN SPECIALLY for this Reading Book, and are, therefore, COPYRIGHT.
