THE volume here presented to the public will be found to contain a digest or summary of the most important and interesting facts connected with the history of the world during a thousand years, or from the rise of the Roman Emperors to the time of the Norman Conquest. The principal revolutions in Europe during this period are here sketched in the lives of those remarkable men, whose

biography is connected with eras, from whence may be dated the great events-moral, political and religious-which have so powerfully influenced the progress and decline of states and empires. As the work has been compiled with a view to educational purposes, the chronology of every principal event has been added. A summary of each chapter is also given at the termination of it; and a reference to the number of the section will thus afford the student, or the teacher, an easy method for question and examination. In a compilation of this kind, it has not been thought necessary to indicate the sources from which the compiler has drawn up the work; but no statement has been introduced for which the best authority may not be appealed to. It is believed that this volume will supply a course of historical readings, well suited to the upper classes of schools, or to those persons whose time and inclination may not admit of more laborious and extensive researches in this department of useful knowledge.
