All the doings of the Lord are mercy and truth
To those who keep his covenant and his precepts.
Who is the man that feareth the Lord?

Him doth he show the way which he should choose. He shall himself dwell in prosperity,

And his offspring shall inherit the land. Mine eyes are ever directed to the Lord,

For he will pluck my feet from the net. Look upon me, and pity me!

For I am desolate and afflicted. Lighten the sorrows of my heart,

And deliver me from my troubles! Look upon my affliction and distress, And forgive all my sins!

Guard thou my life, and deliver me;

Let me not be put to shame, for I have trusted in
thee!

Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
For on thee do I rest my hope!

-Out of the depths do I cry unto thee, O Lord!
O Lord, listen to my voice;

Let thine ear be attentive to my supplication.
If thou, Lord, shouldst treasure up transgressions,
Lord, who could stand?

But with thee is forgiveness,

That thou mayst be feared.

I trust in the Lord, my soul doth trust;

And in his promise do I confide.

My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning;

Yea, more than they that watch for the morning.

O thou Infinite Spirit, we know that thou needest no sacrifice at our hands, nor any offering at our lips; yet we live in thy world, we taste thy bounty, we breathe thine air; thy power sustains us, thy justice guides, thy goodness preserves, and thy love blesses us forever and ever.

O Lord, we cannot fail to praise thee, though we cannot praise thee as we would.

We thank thee for the world that is about us; now serene, now visited with storms; and in serenity and in storms still guarded and watched and blessed by thee.

For daily life, for its duties to exercise our hands, for its trials and temptations to make strong our hearts, for the friends that are dear to us, we thank thee.

We thank thee, O Lord, for thy tender providence which is over all, for thy loving-kindness which blesses the child and the old man, and which regards the sinner with affection.

Thy ways are not our ways, nor thy thoughts our thoughts.

Father, we know that we sin; we forget thy laws; the world has dominion over us, and we are slaves to passion and sense.

Father, redeem us, and forgive us in thy love.

We rejoice as we remember that thy love is infinite, that thou tenderly carest for thy children, that thou art the shepherd of the sheep, and in thy bosom bearest the feeble lambs, and gently leadest, at last, each wanderer back to his home.

Drawn by thee, we pray, that by penitence we may wash out the remembrance of wrong, and with wings of new resolution fly out of darkness in the midst of transgression, into the higher, brighter heaven of human duty, of human joy, and the peace of God. Teach us, O Lord, to use this world wisely, faithfully, and well.

In its daily duties and its trials may we find the school for wisdom, for goodness, and for piety. Help us to live at peace with our souls, and with thee.

Withhold from us what is evil.

May we be at one with God and man.

Unto the King eternal, the immortal, invisible, only God,

Be honor and glory, forever and ever. Amen.

CHOIR.

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy

sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Thou who wast, and art, and evermore shalt be.

EIGHTEENTH SERVICE.

CONFIDENCE IN GOD.

EVENING PRAYER.

Psalms xl., xlvi.

1 TRUSTED steadfastly in the Lord,
And he listened, and heard my cry.

He drew me out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay ;

He set my foot upon a rock,

And made my steps firm.

He hath put into my mouth a new song,
A song of praise to our God.

Many shall see and fear,

And put their trust in the Lord.

Happy the man who maketh the Lord his trust,

And resorteth not to men of pride and falsehood. Many, O Lord, my God! are the wonderful works which thou hast done:

Many have been thy gracious purposes towards us. None can be compared to thee:

Would I declare and rehearse them, they are more than can be numbered.

In sacrifice and oblation thou hast no pleasure,

Burnt-offering and sin-offering thou requirest not; Therefore I said, Lo, I come.

O my God, to do thy will is my delight,

And thy law dwelleth in my heart!

I have proclaimed thy righteousness in the great assembly,

I hide not thy justice in my heart;

I declare thy faithfulness and thy salvation;

I conceal not thy mercy and truth from the great assembly.

Withdraw not from me thy tender mercies, O Lord!

May thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually
preserve me!

For evils without number have encompassed me;
My iniquities have overtaken me.

I cannot see the end of them;

They are more than the hairs of my head,
And my
heart dieth within me:

May it please thee, O Lord, to deliver me!

O Lord, make haste to mine aid!
