But few amendments were made to the election laws by the Legislature of 1897.

Act No. 16 amends section 4 (Sec. 70 herein) so as to empower cities, villages and townships to divide election districts when they contain over 300 voters, but it does not require them to be divided when they have that number or any number more than 300.

Act No. 17 amends section 38 (Sec. 41 herein) so that duplicate returns only (instead of triplicate) are required to be made at a general election.

Act No. 59 amends section 17 (Sec. 62 herein) so as to dispense with metallic stamps for marking ballots, substituting "at least three black or blue lead pencils," to be attached by strings in each booth. The same Act amends section 26 (Sec. 12 herein) so as to require the voter to "mark a cross instead of "stamp a cross in marking his ballot.

Act No. 266 amends section 14 (Sec. 60 herein), and adds a new section, so that constitutional amendments or other questions are submitted separately from the general ballot, although where there are several such questions they all go on one ballot.
