I. The northwest coast is the expression usually employed in the Uni-5 ted States, at the present time, to distinguish the vast portion of the American continent, which extends north of the 40th parallel of latitude from the Pacific to the great dividing ridge of the Rocky Mountains, to gether with the contiguous islands in that ocean. The southern part of this territory, which is drained almost entirely by the River Columbia.
