Nepos dispossesses Glycerius of the empire, and obliges him to take priestly orders.

Euric, king of the Goths, breaks peace with the emperor, and enters Auvergne with a great army. Nepos makes Orestes governor of his forces in Gaul; who, instead of marching thither, endeavours to obtain the empire.

Orestes proclaims his own son Augustulus, though very young, emperor; and himself his guardian during his minority.

Zeno, the colleague of Leo II., emperor of the East, concludes a shameful peace with Genseric, and yields Africa to him and to his successors for

Orestes, demand a third part of Italy for their reward; and on being refused, revolt, and choose the famed Odoacer, a private man in the guards, and a bold barbarian, for their leader, who besieges Orestes in Pavia, and takes it by storm.

Orestes is taken prisoner, and put to death by Odoacer.

Odoacer proceeds to Ravenna, where he causes Paul, the brother of Orestes to be put to death; and then strips young Augustulus of his imperial insignia, and confines him in the castle of Lucullanum.

Rome readily submits to Odoacer, who causes himself to be proclaimed king of Italy. An end is thus put to the Western empire of Rome, which had continued, from the battle of Actium, five hundred and seven years.
