To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives.

The Thirty-second Annual Abstract of Polls, Property, Taxes, etc., as assessed May 1, 1892, is herewith submitted, in accordance with the provisions of section 57, chapter 11, Public Statutes.

The number of female polls assessed is not returned, the provision of law requiring an assessment of a tax upon certain female polls having been repealed.

The results of a comparison of the returns of 1892 with those of 1891 are shown in the "Comparative Statement," on pages 4, 5 and 6, and in the "Increase or Decrease," etc., in tabular form on pages 8 to 11 inclusive.

The "Aggregates," etc., "during thirty-two years, 18611892," are printed on pages 60 to 63 inclusive.

COMPARATIVE STATEMENT.

[Arranged in the same order as the columns in the Table of Aggregates.] There were 28 cities and 324 towns in the Commonwealth, May 1, 1892.

Residents Assessed on Property. Individuals: increase 4,880; 23 cities, 160 towns increased; 5 cities, 147 towns decreased; 17 towns unchanged. All Others: increase 3,849; 18 cities, 163 towns increased; 9 cities, 94 towns decreased; 1 city, 67 towns unchanged. Total: increase, 8,729; 22 cities, 176 towns increased; 6 cities, 133 towns decreased; 15 towns unchanged.

Non-residents Assessed on Property. Individuals: increase 1,768; 14 cities, 170 towns increased; 13 cities, 138 towns decreased; 1 city, 16 towns unchanged. All Others: increase 398; 15 cities, 147 towns increased; 12 cities, 94 towns decreased; 1 city, 83 towns unchanged. Total: increase, 2,166; 16 cities, 192 towns increased; 12 cities, 112 towns decreased; 20 towns unchanged.

Persons Assessed. On Property: increase 12,620; 22 cities, 199 towns increased; 6 cities, 117 towns decreased; 8 towns unchanged. For Poll Tax only increase, 18,214; 21 cities, 179 towns increased; 7 cities, 130 towns decreased; 15 towns unchanged. Total: increase 30,834; 25 cities, 200 towns increased; 3 cities, 115 towns decreased; 9 towns unchanged.

Male Polls: increase, 20,393; 24 cities, 179 towns increased; 4 cities, 137 towns decreased; 8 towns unchanged.

Rate of Tax on Male Polls: 1 town increased; 1 town decreased; 28 cities, 322 towns unchanged. Lowest rate, viz., *$1.00 assessed, as usual, in city of Chelsea, towns of Revere and Winthrop, county of Suffolk; highest rate, viz., $2.00 assessed in 27 cities, 318 towns. Rates from $1.50 to $1.87 assessed in 4 towns.

Personal Estate. Excluding Resident Bank Stock: increase $12,968,800; 19 cities, 131 towns increased; 9 cities, 193 towns decreased. Resident Bank Stock: decrease, $96,169; 13 cities, 47 towns increased; 14 cities, 35 towns decreased; 1 city, 242 towns unchanged; 1 city, 236 towns no figures; 1 city, 236 towns no figures in 1891. Total: increase $12,872,631; 19 cities, 133 towns increased; 9 cities, 191 towns. decreased.

Real Estate. Buildings: increase $40,858,418; 28 cities, 264 towns increased; 59 towns decreased; 1 town unchanged. Land: increase $34,251,768; 26 cities, 189 towns increased; 2 cities, 134 towns decreased; 1 town unchanged. Total: increase $75,110,186; 28 cities, 258 towns increased; 66 towns decreased.

Total Valuation increase $87,982,817; 27 cities, 213 towns increased; 1 city, 111 towns decreased.

Tax. On Personal Estate: increase $424,905; 23 cities, 179 towns increased; 5 cities, 145 towns decreased. On Real Estate increase $1,759,590; 25 cities, 215 towns increased; 3 cities, 108 towns decreased: 1 town unchanged. On Polls:

increase $38,753; 24 cities, 177 towns increased; 4 cities, 141 towns decreased; 6 towns unchanged. Total: increase $2,223,248; 25 cities, 200 towns increased; 3 cities, 124 towns decreased.

Rate of Tax per $1,000: 21 cities, 167 towns increased; 4 cities, 112 towns decreased; 3 cities, 45 towns unchanged. Highest rate, viz., $26.00 assessed in town of Granville, county of Hampden. Lowest rate, viz., $4.67 in town of Gosnold, county of Dukes County. Rates from $6.15 to $9.90 assessed in 32 towns; $10.00 to $14.80 in 5 cities, 151 towns; $15.00 to $19.50 in 23 cities, 121 towns; $20.00 to $25.00 in 18 towns.

Horses increase 3,408; 19 cities, 219 towns increased; 9 cities, 97 towns decreased; 8 towns unchanged.

Cows: decrease 3,330; 10 cities, 130 towns increased; 18 cities, 190 towns decreased; 4 towns unchanged.

Sheep decrease 444; 2 cities, 116 towns increased; 8 cities, 125 towns decreased; 18 cities, 83 towns unchanged; 17 cities, 79 towns no figures; 15 cities, 76 towns no figures in 1891.
