(This line-formerly the Charleston and Savannah Railroad-was in operation before the War, and during it was destroyed. It has been reconstructed under a special charter of the State of South Carolina by the present organization. It was reopened for traffic on March 2, 1870.)

The absolute length of road between Alexandria and Lynchburg is 170.6 miles; the distance between Gordonsville and Charlottesville, 22.3 miles-being owned by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company; but which is used by the O. A. & M. Company, for which the latter pay to the former 62 per cent. of their earnings on said distance.
