The section between Arlington and Lebanon was opened Oct. 6, 1869. The road to be further extended to Springfield, 56 miles, by May 1, 1870, and 50 miles still further by July 1, 1870.

This road was chartered as the South-West Branch of the Pacific Railroad of Missouri, the means for the construction of which were supplied by the State. The road, with the lands belonging to the same, granted by Congress and amounting to about 1,036,000 acres, were conveyed to the present Company, on condition that they would complete the road. As security for such an agreement, they were required to deposit with the State Treasurer $1,500,000-the amount to be drawn by the Company as the work progressed, and when completed to be wholly drawn. Fifty-eight and a quarter miles were opened in 1869 and 106 miles more will be open July 1, 1870. The South Pacific will eventually be merged in the road projected to the Pacific Ocean and generally known as the Atlantic and Pacific, or Trans-conti

nental Railroad. The Company have issued bonds at the rate of $25,000 per mile, dated July 1, 1868, bearing 6 per cent. interest and payable in twenty years-principal and interest payable in gold.

Operations for the year ending December 31, 1869.-Gross earnings-passenger, $131,618 04; freight, $191,107 24; mail and express, $17,859 39; other, $7,633 26— total, $348,217 93. Operating expenses, $144,745 17. Nett earnings, $203,472 76.
