Meeker, of Greenville, elected his successor for a term of five years, beginning May 14, 1888. 2 Isaac P. Pugsley, of Toledo, elected his successor for the term of five years, beginning November 4, 1888. 3 Section 2 of the act of March 25, 1883 (80 Ohio Laws, 76), authorizing the election of an additional Common Pleas Judge in the first subdivision of the firth judicial district, provided that vacancies in the office of such judge "shall be filled as in vacancies in the office of the other judges of said court, and all elections therefor shall be held on the second Tuesday of October next p ecding the expiration of his term of office." Under this section no election was held to elect a successor to succe 1 Judge Cowen on the second Tuesday of October, 1857. But at the general election held in November, 1887, the electors of the first subdivision of the fifth judicial district voted for such successor, and of the votes cast, Frank Davis, of New Richmond, received a majority. 4 Successor to be elected April 2, 1888. The matter is in dispute as to whether the term of this Judge will expire on the first day of February or first day of May, 1888. Attorney-Generals Isaiah Pillars and George K. Nash are said to have given conflicting opinions in regard to it, and the question is now again before the AttorneyGeneral for his opinion. Judge John H. Ridgely, of Tiffin, was elected November 8, 1887, for a term of five years, to succeed Judge Dodge, on whichever one of the dates herein first above-named is finally agreed upon as the correct one for the expiration of the latter's term. |
