REPORT FOR FEBRUARY.

REFERENCE DEPARTMENT.

During the month of February there were received at the Library, by purchase, 647 volumes and 334 pamphlets; by gift, 2,351 volumes and 4,332 pamphlets; and by exchange, 727 volumes and 4,888 pamphlets, making a total of 3,725 volumes and 9,554 pamphlets.

There were catalogued 2,391 volumes and 2,947 pamphlets; the number of cards written was 4,283, and of slips for the copying machine 3,910; from the latter were received 20,813 cards.

The following table shows the number of readers, and the number of volumes consulted, in the Astor and Lenox Branches during the month:

Gifts worthy of mention were received from the following: American Industries, 105 current periodicals; Audit Company of New York, a copy of "American Trust Companies, their growth and present wealth," two addresses before the Trust Company section of the American Bankers' Association, by Edward T. Perrine, New York, 1909; British Museum, four portfolios, "Medallic illustrations of the history of Great Britain & Ireland," including plates LXXI to CX; California Promotion Committee of San Francisco, 132 volumes, 275 pamphlets, 10 maps, relating to California industries, etc.; Carnegie Institution of Washington, 157 volumes and 553 pamphlets, including publications of the Institution and a large number of miscellaneous works; A. Y. Casanova, a copy of his "A Carpenter family of Lancaster," 1910; Century Company, 413 volumes and 595 pamphlets; Evening Post, ten volumes of recent New York newspapers; Most Rev. John M. Farley, a copy of his "History of St. Patrick's Cathedral," New York, 1908; J. Pierpont Morgan, a set of nine photographs of the Raphael tapestry in the Vatican; Stuyvesant F. Morris, five volumes, including "Reports of cases adjudged in the Court of Exchequer in the years 1655 . . . to 21 Charles II," collected by Sir Thomas Hardres, London, 1693, etc.; New Yorker StaatsZeitung, 108 volumes, the Abendblatt, Wochenblatt, etc.; Ministerio de Fomento de Peru, 15 volumes, 3 pamphlets and 43 periodicals, chiefly Peruvian documents; Robert P. Porter, 345 volumes, 915 pamphlets and 2 scrapbooks, the collection being mainly documents; Hugo Reisinger, a collection of 80 musical portraits, selected by Gustave Kobbé.

At the LENOx branch the exhibition of modern book plates in the print galleries and F. G. Stevenson's mezzotints in color in the lower hall continued during the month.

At the ASTOR branch the exhibition of plates from "Gewebesammlung des königlichen Kunstgewerbemuseums zu Berlin" was continued and eighteen photographic studies of American Indians made by Karl Moon and recently presented by Mrs. Henry Draper were put on view.

In addition there were bulletins on George Washington in twenty-four branches, on Abraham Lincoln in twenty-one, on Longfellow in seven, on new books in six, on subjects of Board of Education lectures in four, on St. Valentine's Day in three, on Italy in two, and on the American Civil War in two branches.

At the RIVINGTON STREET branch was shown an exhibit of birds and butterflies lent by the American Museum of Natural History; at HAMILTON FISH PARK a collection of articles of industry from the Philippine Islands also lent by the Museum of Natural History; at the WEBSTER branch bronze bas-reliefs of Lincoln by the Bohemian artist, Joseph Kratina, and at the 115TH STREET branch an exhibit of German and Norwegian dolls, lent by Miss Ash.
