"This is a remarkable and interesting work-a work
of thought and of feeling. It is written as a series of
essays, all bearing the impress of a poetical, a cultivated,
and a graceful mind. They are full of a variety of in-
formation, and resemble a mental diary, recording his
impressions as he travelled through our world of poetry.
The essay on Milton is, as a whole, what we like best.
It is written in a fine spirit of appreciation, and with a
careful investigation of the history of the times."

According to Dr. Parr's note in the Bibliotheca Parriana, this work was written by "the very learned and most acute" JOHN HOWES, of Norwich. The completion of this rare and singular book has occupied two active collectors for several years. It is the only one which has occurred for sale since Bindley's (see Cat. part 2, 543) which sold for £10. 10s. 6d. in old binding. In D'Israeli's Calamities of Authors will be found an account of Myles Davies and his works, "from which" he says, "much curious literary history may be extracted."
