Excerpt from The Boston Book: Being Specimens of Metropolitan Literature

Compilations are daily increasing, both in num ber and variety. Generally speaking, we believe they are deservedly deemed admirable means of diffusing knowledge and extending the empire of thought and sentiment. That a portion of these works are of doubtful utility, is indeed obvious; but that many are appropriate and valuable is equally apparent. There are few, we apprehend, better calculated to subserve the cause of improve ment than such as, with the advantage of a local name and interest, are designed to embody and dis seminate the more finished specimens of periodical literature. In this country, especially, where some of the best results of mind are thus presented, the adoption of this method is singularly important.
