The Lord's Day and its Ordinances.

4 He hears our praises and complaints;
And while his awful voice
Divides the sinners from the saints,
We tremble and rejoice.

5 Peace be within this sacred place,
And joy a constant guest!
With holy gifts and heavenly grace
Be her attendants bless'd!

6 My soul shall pray for Zion still,
While life or breath remains!

There my best friends, my kindred dwell,
There God my Saviour reigns.

HOW pleas'd and bless'd was I
To hear the people cry,

Come, let us seek our God to-day!'
Yes, with a cheerful zeal,

We haste to Zion's hill,

And there our vows and honours pay.

2 Zion, thrice happy place,

3

Adorn'd with wondrous grace,

[ocr errors]

And walls of strength embrace thee round;
In thee our tribes appear,

To pray, and praise, and hear

The sacred gospel's joyful sound.

There David's greater Son
Has fix'd his royal throne,

He sits for grace and judgment there;
He makes the sinner sad,

He bids the saint be glad,

And humble souls rejoice with fear.

4 May peace attend thy gate,

[ocr errors]

And joy within thee wait,
To bless the soul of every guest!
The man that seeks thy peace,
And wishes thine increase,
A thousand blessings on him rest!

My tongue repeats her vows,

'Peace to this sacred house!'

[ocr errors]

For there my friends and kindred dwell!
And since my glorious God

Makes thee his bless'd abode,
My soul shall ever love thee well.

1 ARISE, O king of grace, arise,

And enter to thy rest;

[ocr errors]

Lo! thy church waits with longing eyes,
Thus to be own'd and bless'd.

2 Enter with all thy glorious train,
Thy Spirit and thy word;

All that the ark did once contain
Could no such grace afford.

3 Here, mighty God, accept our vows,
Here let thy praise be spread;
Bless the provisions of thy house,
And fill thy poor with bread.

4 Here let the Son of David reign,
Let God's anointed shine;

Justice and truth his court maintain
With love and power divine.

5 Here let him hold a lasting throne; And, as his kingdom grows,

1

Fresh honours shall adorn his crown,
And shame confound his foes.

While in his holy courts ye wait:
Ye saints that to his house belong,
Or stand attending at his gate.

2 Praise ye the Lord; the Lord is good;
To praise his name is sweet employ
Israel he chose of old, and still
His church is his peculiar joy.

8 Bless ye the Lord, who taste his love,
People and priests, exalt his name:
Among his saints he ever dwells;
His church is his Jerusalem.

To heaven your joy and wonder raise,
For there his glory dwells.

While rehearse his deeds;

But the great work of saving love
Your highest praise exceeds.

3 All that have motion, life, and breath, A. Proclaim your Maker blest;

Yet when my voice expires in death,
My soul shall praise him best.

1 FAR from my thoughts, vain world, be gone! Let my religious hours alone:

Fain would my eyes my Saviour see;
I wait a visit, Lord, from thee.

[ocr errors]

2 My heart grows warm with holy fire,
And kindles with a pure desire;
Come, my dear Jesus, from above,
And feed my soul with heavenly love.
3 Bless'd Jesus, what delicious fare! S
How sweet thy entertainments are!TO
Never did angels taste above
Redeeming grace and dying love.
4 Hail, great Immanuel! all divine,
In thee thy Father's glories shine;
Thou brightest, sweetest, fairest one,
That eyes have seen, or angels known.

LORD, what a heaven of saving grace I
Shines through the beauties of thy face,
And lights our passions to a flame!
Lord, how we love thy charming name!

2 When I can say, 'My God is mine!'
When I can feel thy glories shine,
I tread the world beneath my feet,
And all that earth calls good or great.
3 While such a scene of sacred joys
Our raptur'd eyes and souls employs,
Here we could sit, and gaze away
A long, an everlasting day.

[ocr errors]

4 Well, we shall quickly pass the night
To the fair coasts of perfect light;
Then shall our joyful senses rover
O'er the dear object of our love.

5 Send comforts down from thy right hand,
While we pass through this barren land;
And in thy temple let us see
A glimpse of love, a glimpse of thee.
