and Evening Hymns," at the close of the volume, and in a few other instances also, will be found some, chiefly applicable to personal and retired devotionchs son

In very few cases has any alteration been madel in the language of the Hymns selected, and in these, only under the influence of considerations which appeared to justify, if not even to require this liberty. In very numerous instances, howay ever, entire verses have been omitted,' either because the Hymns are sufficiently long and sufficiently complete without them, or because they exhibit some shade of sentiment which to the Compiler appears unauthorized by the word of God.

to the blessing of the adorable Head of the Church, this volume is now commended. May itzi by his gracious and condescending favour, be conducive to the excitement and to the sexo pression of that grateful praise, by which a tribute of acceptable adoration shall be rendered to the Eather, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. bunoi insisiasa 10 !

HYMNS.

GENERAL ASCRIPTIONS OF PRAISÉ. 1. (PSALM 146.)

L. M. 4 PRAISE ye the Lord, my heart shall join

In work so pleasant, so divine, Now while the flesh is my abode, And when

my

soul ascends to God.
2 Praise shall employ my noblest powers

While immortality endures ;
My days of praise shall ne'er be past,

While life, and thought, and being last. 3 Why should I make a man my trust ?

culty
Princes must die, and turn to dust;
Their breath departs; their pomp, and power,
And thoughts, all vanish in an hour. tó

1,7 4 Happy the man whose hopes rely

On Israel's God; he made the sky,

And earth and seas with all their train,
And none shall find his promise vain.
5 His truth for ever stands secure :

He saves the oppress'd, he feeds the poor;
He sends the labouring conscience peace,
And grants the prisoner sweet release.
