COVER SUBJECT

First State Aid Road
That portion of the Cadiz-Dennison
Inter-county Highway, formerly known
as the "Tappan state aid road", was
one of the first, (if not the first), state
aid improvements to be made on the
inter-county highway system.

In pioneer days the U. S. troops
marched over this route, and camped
on what is now known as the Nate
Smith farm, on their way to the mas-
sacre of Chief Knadenhutten and other
Indians who were converts to the
Moravian faith.

The famous Standing Stone, a freak,
and a relic of a past geological period,
is located within view of this road about
two miles of Cadiz.

In the early days of state aid it be-
came apparent that proper drainage and
maintenance required the use of the full
width of the original right of way.
Hence, one of the first difficulties to
overcome was to "persuade" farmers
to move their fences back. To avoid
legal objections the first try-out was
made on old "state roads", laid out as
such under an old established state law.
The first persuader was Superintendent
Pete MacLaren, an ex-football star of
O. S. U. Pete's first demonstration was
on the Cadiz-Dennison route in Har-
rison County, and after he showed how
a fence could be moved back, other
farmers were more easily persuaded.
