means;

the way of redemption, where all exceeds his comprehension. He must receive what is offered, and receive it without a question as to terms, without a thought as to and faith, the full assurance of faith, must be the feeling with which he embraces the offer of eternal life. Our blessed Lord, therefore, returned no answer to the cavil of His Apostle. He did not wait, as at other times, to explain the apparent difficulty, or to remove the objection. His only language was, "If I wash thee not, thou hast no part in me." Whatever may be the reasons which thou hast to give, why this should not be so, there is one reason why it should be so-Thy Master wills it! If it is not done, thou hast not what thy nature needs, thou art not clean. Without hesitating, then, as to the necessity of the service, without questioning the propriety of the means which thy Master sees fit to use, receive with meekness what he is pleased to give, and wait in faith for the fulfilment of the promise.

H

THE WIDOW OF NAIN.

BY THE REV. CHARLES B. TAYLER.

"I'm going home, my Mother;
We all are strangers here,
My Father and my Brother,-
I soon shall meet them there.
I only weep, my Mother,
Because I think of thee,

And wish there were another,

To take the place of me.

We have been never lonely,
Though left so long alone,—
Two loving hearts-two only,
A widow and her son.

But God has blessed us ever;
And since it is His will

Mother and child to sever,
Oh, He will bless us still.
