A Description of the MORNING

Written about the year 1712.

TOW hardly here and there an hackney-coach

N

Appearing, shew'd the ruddy morn's approach.

Now Betty from her mafter's bed had flown,

And foftly ftole to difcompofe her own:
The flipfhod 'prentice from his master's door:
Had par'd the dirt, and sprinkled round the floor.
Now Moll had whirl'd her mop with dextrous airs,
Prepar'd to fcrub the entry and the ftairs.

* These three laft lines were intended to ridicule the practice of modern poets, who make three lines rhyme together, which they call triplets; and the laft line two or more fyllables longer than the reft, which they call an alexandrine. Thefe triplets and alexandrines were brought in by Dryden and other poets in the reign of Charles II. They were merely the effects of hafte, idlenefs, and want of money, and have been wholly avoided by the beft poets finee thefe veries were written.

The youth with broomy ftumps began to trace

The kennel's edge, where wheels had worn the place.

The fmall-coal man was heard with cadence deep 11
Till drown'd in fhriller notes of chimney-fweep:

Duns at his Lordship's gates began to meet ;

And brick-duft Moll had fcream'd thro' half the street.
'The turnkey now his flock returning fees,
Duly let out a-nights to steal for fees:

The watchful bailiffs take their filent ftands,

And school-boys lag with fatchels in their hands.

HORACE, epift. 7. book 1. imitated, and addreffed to the Earl of OXFORD T, in the year 17131.

H

ARLEY, the nation's great support,
Returning home one day from court,
(His mind with public cares possest,
All Europe's bus'nefs in his breast),
Obferv'd a parfon near Whitehall
Cheap'ning old authors on a ftall.
The priest was pretty well in cafe,
And fhew'd fome humour in his face;

Cultello proprios purgantem leniter ungues.

Look'd with an easy, careless mien,
A perfect stranger to the spleen ;
Of fize that might a pulpit fill,
But more inclining to fit ftill.

My Lord (who, if a man may fay't,
Loves mischief better than his meat)
Was now difpos'd to crack a jeft,
And bid friend Lewis go in queft,
(This Lewis is a cunning fhaver,
And very much in Harley's favour),
In queft, who might this parfon be,
What was his name, of what degree,
If poffible, to learn his story,
And whether he were Whig or Tory.
LEWIS his patron's humour knows,
Away upon his errant goes,
And quickly did the matter fift;
Found out that it was Doctor Swift;

A clergyman of special note

For fhunning those of his own coat;

He now intended to retire.

SAID Harley, I defire to know

From his own mouth if this be so ;
Step to the Doctor strait, and say,
I'd have him dine with me to-day..
Swift feem'd to wonder what he meant,
Nor would believe my Lord had fent;
So never offer'd once to ftir;
But coldly faid, Your fervant, Sir..
Does he refufe me? Harley cry'd:
He does, with infolence and pride.
Some few days after Harley fpies
The Doctor faften'd by the eyes
At Charing-crofs among the rout,
Where painted monsters are hung out:
He pull'd the string, and stopt his coach,
Beck'ning the Doctor to approach.

Soon grows domestic; seldom fails

Came early, and departed late:
In short, the gudgeon took the bait.
My Lord would carry on the jeft,
And down to Windsor takes his guest.
Swift much admires the place and air,
And longs to be a canon thère ;

In winter, never to refide.

A canon! that's a place too mean;
