LONDON MARKETS,

FROM FRIDAY, APRIL 24, TO MAY 15, 1818.
FRIDAY, MAY 24.

COTTON. The extensive sale at the East-India House was brought forward this forenoon, and from the great quantity of Bengals, it was believed the prices would go off exceedingly low; the sale was in consequence well attended; the whole went off with spirit, and greatly higher than what had been anticipated, fully maintaining the late prices.-Bengals from 10 d. to 12jd; besides the East-India Company's sale, 888 bales Surats were brought forward to auction this forenoon; the prices 15 d. to 16d.; and 100 bags Berbice 2s. d. to 28. 240. The sales by private contract since our last are-1400 Pernams 28. Id. to 2s. 24d. 87 Surinams, 28. to 2s. Id.; 600 Surats 144d, to 174d.; 300 Bengals 101d. to lld.

• SUGAR.-The demand for Sugar early in the week was very considerable, and from the scarcity of good parcels, the holders realized prices a shade higher; the request has since given way, and the market currency cannot be stated at any variation since our last; the wind continues easterly, which will prevent any new supplies from being brought to market.

The demand for retined goods has rather subsided, with the exception of the request

for Lumps, which continues; the market may be stated a shade lower.-Molasses remain steady.-in Foreign Sugars there is little doing.

COFFEE.-There was a considerable public sale brought forward yesterday; the ordinary descriptions went off at high prices, rather realizing an advance on the late rates by private contract; the fine Coffee went a shade lower.

[ocr errors]

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.— The Rum market continues exceedingly heavy; there are few purchases since our Jast, and generally the prices may be stated a shade lower. The demand for Brandy has entirely subsided; were sales forced in the present languid state of the market, the quotations could not be realized; the holders are however not eager to effect sales, on account of the unfavourable reports from France.-There have been few sales of Geneva; the prices are unvaried,

OIL.-There have been considerable transactions in Whale Oil; several rather extensive parcels have been changing hands; the prices are a shade higher.

RICE. The demand for Rice has considerably subsided: 3520 bags East-India, by public sale, met with no buyers; the whole was taken in 21s. 6d. a 24s.
