EDITOR'S PREFACE.

as

THIS volume contains two works by Emerson familiar, almost, as the "Essays "—namely, “English Traits" and "The Conduct of Life." The former was published in 1856, and is equal in interest to his best work, though less lofty in scope. The "Conduct of Life" (1860) follows the thought of the "Essays," to which, however, it is much 'nferior in style and matter. "Nature" (1836) is placed here where an early work can best be judged—that is, after the author's most characteristic pieces.
