In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the State of Tennessee, the Senate of the Forty-second General Assembly met at the Capitol of said State on the 3rd day of January, A. D. 1881.

The Senate was called to order by T. C. Long, Principal Clerk of the last Senate, at 12 o'clock, M.

The proceedings were opened with prayer by the Rev. T. A. Hoyt, of Nashville.

The clerk proceeded to call the roll by districts, and the following Senators presented their credentials, and were sworn in by the Hon. Thomas J. Freeman, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court:

From the First District-composed of the counties of Johnson, Carter, Washington and Greene-A. J. Brown.

From the Second District-composed of the counties of Sullivan, Hawkins, Hamblen, Hancock and Claiborne-H. F. Coleman.

From the Third District-composed of the counties of Cocke, Jefferson, Sevier and Blount-W. L. Duggan.

From the Fourth District-composed of the counties of Union, Grainger, Anderson and Knox-Lafayette Huddleston.

From the Fifth District-composed of the counties of Campbell, Morgan, Scott, Fentress, Roane, Overton, White, Putnam and Cumberland-L. T. Smith.

From the Sixth District-composed of the counties of Loudon, Monroe, McMinn, Meigs, Polk and Bradley-J. G. Carter.
