Pfalms and Leffons are to be read, nor how many Prayers are to be repeated at one Time.

The Weaknefs and Circumftances of the Sick Patient, are in fuch Cafes to be confidered.

The Sick Man's Self-Exa-
mination.

IN

N the Order for the Vifitation of the Sick, the Church of England (whofe Pious Directions I defire always to follow) doth thus Admonish the Sick and Dying Perfon.

Forafmuch as after this Life, there is an Account to be given unto the righteous Judge, by whom all must be judged, without refpect of Perfons; I require you to examine your Self and your Eftate, both toward God and Man: fo that accufing and condemning your Self for your own Faults, you may find Mercy at our heavenly Father's 04

hands for Chrift's Jake and not be accused and condemned in that fearful Judgment.

The Sick Man being thus Admonished, let him then proceed to the performance of this great Duty.

And First, let him be convinced of the Neceffity of it, by thus expoftulating with himself.

Motives to Examination.

My Soul, thou art now in the Prefence of the great Judge of Heaven and Earth. Before whofe dreadful Tribunal thou must certainly appear at the Day of Judgment, to give a ftrict Account of all thy Actions; and of every idle Word, and of every evil Thought. And then my own Confcience will be my Accufer.

Think, O my Soul, think, if thou canft, what unimaginable Terrors will feize an impenitent

Sinner; when the last Trump calls him out of his Grave, and the Devils begin to drag him to God's Judgment-Seat.

What would fuch a Wretch give, to purchase One fuch Opportunity of Repentance, as God now in great Mercy gives thee? If ever thou hopest to escape those Horrors, O my Soul make thy Peace with God: and judge thy felf here, left thou be condemned hereafter.

And may he that fearcheth the Heart, and trieth the Reins, difcover to me all the Evil, and Deceits of my own Heart: That I may confefs, and bewail, and forfake them; and obtain Mercy, through Jefus my Saviour.. Amen...

The next Thing to be confidered, is, How, and in What Manner this Self-Examination is to be made..

And herein likewife the Sick Man is thus plainly inftructed by our Church. O 5

The Examination.

Adjure thee, O my Soul, in the prefence of the great Judge, who knows all the Secrets of thy Heart; I adjure thee, as thou wilt anfwer, before God's Judgment-Seat at the last Day, to tell me :
