Basilia, 1557 Theramo (Jacob von) Das Buch Belial, oder Buch von der rechtlichen Uberwundung Cristi wider Sathan den Fürsten der Helle und des Sunders Betröstung, folio, with 35 singular woodcuts, fine copy, old red morocco, rare, £2. 12s 6d Reutlingen, Zeiner, 1472

First edition with a date, not mentioned by Panzer, neither does it appear to be in the collection of Earl Spencer.-In Vol. 3 of the Bibliotheca Spenceriana will be found an analysis of this extraordinary work, "of which the moral or object in view seems to be, the inculcating of a system of law, or a knowledge of the rules of evidence, &c. for those destined for the legal profession. The machinery employed for the elucidation of the moral, or the conveyance of legal instruction, is sufficiently novel and daring. Belial represents Lucifer, and Moses our Saviour, etc." It has been conjectured from points of similarity between the two works, that Milton was not unacquainted with this book when he wrote his Paradise Lost.

CARTER'S ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE OF ENGLAND, edited by J. BRITTON, Esq. 2 vols. in 1, royal folio, NEW AND IMPROVED EDITION, (just published at £12. 12s) 109 plates, hf. bd. morocco, £4. 4s

1845

"The late Mr. Carter (says Mr. Britton) was the first to point out to the public the right way of delineating and representing the component and detached parts of the Old Buildings of England. HIS NATIONAL WORK ON ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE, occupied him in drawing, etching, arranging, and publishing, more than twenty years; and he himself declared it to be the result of his studies through life. IT IS HIGHLY VALUABLE." See Britton's Arch. Antiq. vol. v. pages 38 and 68.

Mr. Pugin says of Carter-"The enthusiastic zeal of that able draughtsman and antiquary, was undoubtedly effectual in checking the mutilation of ancient monumentsWE NE'ER SHALL LOOK UPON HIS LIKE AGAIN."

Mr. Sayers in his Hints on English Architecture,' says, "THAT SPLENDID AND COMPREHENSIVE WORK, the Ancient Architecture of England,' by Mr. Carter,

ONE OF OUR MOST DISTINGUISHED ARCHITECTURAL
DRAUGHTSMEN."
