LOUDON and WESTWOOD's Treatise on Insects | MARTYN'S (T.) ENGLISH ENTOMOLOGIST, exhibit

injurious to Gardens, Forests, and Farms, translated from the German of Köllar, fcap. Bvo. illustrated by 60 woodcuts, (pub. at 7s) extra cloth bds. 4s 6d

1840

"We have always wondered that, in a country like this, where the pursuits of agriculture and horticulture are so universal and important, entomologists should never have bethought them of writing a book of this description. Some of the English followers of this branch of Natural History are of great eminence as systematists, but as to the manner of life of such creatures, the nature of their insidious attacks upon the property of man, or the means by which their ravages may be diminished or arrested, we have hitherto had no good modern information collected together under one head. It is therefore with great satisfaction that we announce the appearance of the present work. The principles of classifying insects, the nature of their transformations, their food, and similar topics, form a short introduction to the body of the work, in which the author treats of insects that attack man and domestic animals; of those which injure grain, pastures, and culinary vegetables; of the enemies of fruit trees, greenhouse and hothouse plants; and finally, of such as prey upon the trees of the forest."-Athenæum.

"Köllar's Treatise on Insects cannot fail to become a standard work; and we have no doubt that it will also become a popular one, as it is written in a clear and simple style, perfectly easy of comprehension, even to those before totally unacquainted with the subject. It is exceedingly well got up, and the engravings are very good; and we heartily recommend this treatise to the attention of every one who possesses a garden or other ground, as we are confident that no one taking an interest in rural affairs can read it without reaping both pleasure and profit from its perusal."- Literary Gazette.
