IT IS THE REGISTER OF BRINKBURNE PRIORY, IN NORTHUMBERLAND, founded IN THE REIGN OF HENRY I, BY WILLIAM De Bertram, BARON OF MITFORD. In 1630 this volume is said to have been in the possession of the Lord William Howard, of Naworth Castle, in Cumberland. The first leaf has since been lost. The documents it contains are very numerous, amounting to above 200, and there is much of the Border history in them, as well as of Cumberland, Northumberland, and the contiguous parts of Scotland, from the Conquest to the middle of the fourteenth century, soon after which this MS. was transcribed. NEOTI, The covers of wood are sheathed in red velvet, and on each side there is an enamelled ornament set in gold, with the motto, "fide, sed cui vide," alluding to the anonymous compiler, and to the fidelity of his transcript.
