AY FORD LANING, Republican, was born at New London, Huron County, Ohio, May 15th, 1853; received an education in the public schools, at an academy, Savannah, Ohio, and at Baldwin University, Berea, Ohio; alternating his time between teaching and attending school.

He was admitted to the bar in May, 1875. Was elected Justice of the Peace soon after becoming of age, and held several minor village offices. He moved to Norwalk, Ohio, in 1882 and has since resided there. Was a member of the City Council from 1884 to 1888. Was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1893 and 1895.

He practiced law until 1885, and gradually changed his calling to that of a publisher. He has written and edited a number of law and historical works in use by the legal profession and as texts in the schools, among which is an entire series of Statutes, Digests and Annotated reports and local law treatise · for Ohio; an Ohio Civics and an Ohio History.

In 1895 he was given an A. M. degree by Baldwin University, and was subsequently elected as, and now is one of its trustees.

He was a delegate to the National Republican convention in Chicago in June, 1904. Was elected to Congress in 1906.
